About the Organization
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
Job Description
Under general direction, the Political/Economic Research Officer works to established policies and procedures to monitor and report on local political and economic developments in the region and works to advance Australia’s interests with Indian state governments. This position may also have thematic areas of responsibility identified as priorities within the Post and may be responsible for economic analysis of key trends across Bengaluru Post’s states of accreditation (currently Karnataka and Telangana) and engagement with major business houses.
Job Responsibilities
- Monitor and conduct high level research and analysis and provide high level advice to post management on key political, economic and social issues and policy developments.
- Prepare regular summaries, high quality draft reports, briefing papers, speeches, Ministerial correspondence discussion papers and and cables on regional political and economic developments.
- Undertake complex interpretation of data and provide quality advice on political and foreign policy developments, drawing on media, surveys and other relevant sources
- Build and maintain a strong network of government, industry, academic, think tank and civil society contacts to advise, inform and facilitate work under the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic
- Partnership (CSP), India Economic Strategy (IES) and Australia’s New Roadmap for Economic Engagement with India.
- Maintain oversight of Australian relations with Bengaluru Post’s states of accreditation (currently Karnataka and Telangana), including maintaining good contact lists and suggesting ways to expand engagement.
- Assist with planning and arrangements for high level visits.
- Contribute towards Direct Aid Program (DAP) outcomes by providing support to the DAP committee.
- Assist with managing Post’s online presence including social media and website.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Relevant tertiary studies and work experience in a similar role.
- Advanced understanding of Indian political, economic and social context, and ability to analyse and make recommendations on key developments and issues as they emerge.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
- Strong oral and written communication skills in Kannada and/or Telugu, including the ability to undertake translation tasks. A working knowledge of Hindi would be an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with government officials, industry representatives, academic and civil society representatives, and develop and maintain a wide range of relevant contacts
- Strong ability to think strategically, locate, synthesise, analyse and communicate complex information and make decisions using sound judgement, expertise and knowledge.
- High-level prioritisation and organisational skills, including the ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to work flexibly, independently and in a diverse team environment.
- Willingness to travel, domestically and internationally, for work purposes, as required.
- Knowledge of Australia and its interests and priorities would be an advantage.
