About the Organization

National Law University Delhi (NLUD) is situated in Dwarka, New Delhi. It is ranked second Best Law School in India by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings and also accredited in A grade by NAAC. It offers courses in law at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Set up by the National Law University Act, 2007, the law school is modelled on the five-year law degree model proposed and implemented by the Bar Council of India.

The primary objective of the University is to evolve and impart comprehensive and interdisciplinary legal education that is socially relevant. Through this education, we aim to promote legal and ethical values and foster the rule of law and the objectives enshrined in the Constitution of India. Furthermore, the University works toward dissemination of legal knowledge and its role in national development, so that the ability to analyse and present contemporary issues of public concern and their legal implications for the benefit of the public is improved. These processes strive to promote legal awareness in the community and to achieve political, social and economic justice.

About the Call for Papers

The aim of the colloquium is to bring together Law (MPhil/PhD) students undertaking research within the broad theme of contemporary issues in law to provide a supportive and collaborative environment for exchange of ideas. Scholars registered in non-law disciplines but working on primarily legal issues from an interdisciplinary perspective are also invited to participate. To enrich scholarly debates and enable collaborative learning, the colloquium offers a panel discussion on research methodology on the second day, inviting senior scholars to provide multiple perspectives on current methodological debates.

The colloquium is structured in a manner that allows for students at different levels of their doctoral journey to participate. Senior doctoral candidates can present near complete papers, that will be supported by comments from discussants, to help improve their work. Another set of sessions will provide doctoral candidates in their early years of doctoral study to make short presentations on their research work to elicit comments from the broader research community. To enrich the proceedings, the organisers also aim to reach out to select senior scholars as invited participants at the colloquium. It is hoped that colloquium will create opportunities and a platform for young scholars to dialogue and sharpen their research ideas, build research collaborations and professional networks.

Theme for the Colloquium

The first inaugural colloquium is formulated in broad terms so to enable the representation of a wide range of issues currently being researched across the country. Given the changing global trade scenario, the environmental challenges due to climate change, the ongoing technological changes that require rapid progress in regulatory architecture, emerging issues in labour rights, contract, competition, company law, the changing nature of debates on caste, race, gender, each provide a rich tapestry of themes that require rigorous research and engagement. The sessions will broadly be categorised into public law, private law and interdisciplinary research. The potential themes that can be addressed includes but not limited to the following areas:

• Constitutional Law
• Criminal law
• Law and Markets
• Competition Law
• Company Law
• Environmental Law
• Labour Law
• Family Law
• Law and Technology
• Climate Change and Energy Law
• Intellectual Property Law
• Trade Law
• Public and Private International Law

However, students are invited to send in their abstracts that do not necessarily fit neatly into the above listed categories. The organisers will strive to build sessions that can capture a wide range of research interests.

How to Apply

Please submit the following by email

• Abstract of the research paper or presentation to be presented at the colloquium (no more than 500 words)
• Brief resume focussing on key research achievements to date (conference presentations, publications etc.). It must also state whether the student is a young scholar or a senior student.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 30th January 2023.

We aim to notify successful applicants by 10th February 2023. Participants presenting a full paper (Session I) will be required to provide a draft paper by 1st March 2023 to give the discussants time to prepare responses and comments. It is expected that the full papers (7000-8000 words) will be a part of ongoing research for doctoral studies. Those presenting a short paper (extended abstract – Session II) will be required to submit a 4000-5000 word write-up outlining the key arguments.

The subject column of the submission email must be composed as “NLUDPHDCOLLOQUIUM2023 Submission – Name”. Please also specify in the email whether it is a full paper for Session I or an extended paper for Session II.
