About the Organization

Water underpins every aspect of human and environmental existence. The severe water challenges facing the world today require an unprecedented global response. IWA members are situated in 140 countries worldwide, forming the largest international network of water professionals working towards a water wise world.

Innovative, solutions- and service- oriented, we work across a range of areas that contribute to the progression of water management worldwide. Transformation cannot take place on its own in a vacuum. Rather the ideas for solutions to these challenges will be fomented and rigorously debated among the IWA’s institutions and membership.

About the Program

The International Water Association (IWA) is calling on all water and sanitation utilities from around the globe to apply to its 2024 Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Programme. This programme aims to inspire utilities to become increasingly Climate Smart and embrace the cultural shift required for a water-wise future. The recognition programme is built on the IWA Climate Smart Utilities Vision and is articulated around three interconnected pillars:

• Adaptation: Improving resilience to adapt to climate change
• Mitigation: Assessing and aiming to reduce GHG emissions
• Leadership: Leading and inspiring others to take Climate Smart action for a water-wise future

This year’s edition will evaluate utilities under two major categories. First is the ‘Achiever’ category which will focus on utilities that have already made substantial progress in their Climate Smart journey (across all three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation and Leadership), and thus will be assessed based on a more detailed framework. The second is the ‘Entrant’ category which will target utilities that have prioritised the climate agenda and have started their Climate Smart journey (covering at least one of the three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation and Leadership), and therefore will be assessed through general narratives of their climate actions.
