About the Organization

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is a membership-based network of organisations and activists, founded in 1990, to empower individuals, organisations and social movements to use information and communications technologies (ICTs) to build strategic communities to contribute to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability.

About the Grant

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is pleased to announce an open call for subgrants to support land and environmental women human rights defenders (WHRDs) [1] in their work to promote safety and prevention of violations against them. These grants are designed to support the development and implementation of holistic safety strategies, including research, advocacy and capacity building, inviting WHRD organisations who work in these areas to explore the intersections between technology and land and environmental issues.

The grants, although allocated to WHRDs focusing on land and environmental rights, are primarily intended to enhance their safety rather than to support their environmental rights defence efforts directly.

This call round is open until 22 April 2024. The amount requested in the project proposals can range from USD 5,000 to USD 15,000 depending on the scope and scale of the proposed intervention. The activities should be implemented and reporting finalised by 30 December 2024.

The subgrants are available to environmental WHRD-led organisations from the global South. APC is particularly interested in supporting collectives and networks from marginalised groups and intersected identities, such as LGBTQIA+, Indigenous, Black and grassroots communities and racial and sexual minorities.

The subgrants are available in three categories:

  • Knowledge development grants provide support for research that produces original and rigorous knowledge on the nature, scope and impact of threats and attacks against WHRDs who work with land and environmental rights, evaluating the effectiveness of technologies for protecting and promoting the safety of these WHRDs.
  • Policy and advocacy grants aim to support the development and implementation of policies and practices that protect and promote the security of WHRDs working at the national and local level, inviting the WHRDs to explore the intersection between technology and land and environmental issues in the promotion of rights.
  • Capacity and resilience building grants support training and other capacity-building activities that help land and environmental WHRDs to develop skills and knowledge in technology to increase safety and care in order to carry out their work effectively.

Eligibility

  • WHRD-led and WHRD-focused organisations from the global South working on land and environmental rights.
