About Program

Commercial truck-drivers in India are an integral part of a transport sector catering to over one billion people. In 2007, Indian truck-drivers were estimated to number five to six million, and have been reported to lead a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle, with no fixed routine and irregular sleeping patterns. This has considerably deleterious effects on the health of this mobile population.

Truck drivers in India have to travel long distances in their lifetime, on an extensive spread of National and State highways. Their occupation predisposes them to a multitude of risk factors such as prolonged sitting and motor vehicle driving, tight running schedules, reduced rest breaks, traffic congestion, sedentary nature of job, and resultant physical, psychological and behavioral problems.  It all affects their health status of driver and result in road accident incidents on the highways. To address these issues the concept of “Eicher Driver Care Program” envisaged by Eicher Group Foundation (EGF) and Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH).

Eicher Driver Care Program (A national level CSR program of Eicher Group Foundation) focuses to improve accessibility of primary quality eye and ear care services to truck drivers across the golden quadrilateral and national route. This program is a combination of both awareness activities and quality eye & ear healthcare services, which would help to improve better eye & ear health care practice among truck drivers and transport community.

Eicher Driver Care Program has been implementing in 15 states across the country successfully since 2016. Till Feb 2021, the program has benefitted 1,24,985 lives including 68,721commercial vehicle drivers across various states including Delhi NCR, UP, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. Furthermore, the program plans on creating a positive impact through the intervention on the lives of 1,50,000 truck drivers by from April 2020 to March 2023 across the entire country.

Joint efforts of EYE & ENT Hospitals, Eicher Group Foundation and SCEH will amplify better eye & ear healthcare practice and knowledge among the trucking community. Better eye and ear healthcare will facilitate better road safety and quality driving.
