Innovations that facilitate linkages of the urban poor to government schemes and benefits

Population Services International

Population Services International (PSI) is a global non-profit charitable organization organized and existing under the laws of the State of North Carolina, United States of America, with operations in over sixty (60) countries, dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world.  For more information please visit www.psi.org.

Project Samagra

Samagra[1] is a PSI-led flagship project on urban health in India. This landmark initiative funded by The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) aims to construct a resilient model(s) of urban health by applying user-centric approaches to catalyse the public and private sector to improve primary health outcomes in urban India. PSI is the prime in this project and works closely with local partners to increase the use of modern contraceptives, case detection for tuberculosis (TB) and multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB and improve the coverage of maternal and child health care including antenatal care (ANC), intra-natal, and postnatal care (PNC), and immunization.

Samagra will create an urban health ecosystem that is responsive, affordable, and equitable, and which provides quality preventive, promotive, and curative primary health care for the urban poor, with a focus on women, girls, and other vulnerable populations. While the project is focussed on improving comprehensive primary health outcomes in urban areas, especially RMNCH+A and TB, the effort is also to test, build and replicate an urban resilience model with primary health / community health as one of its key levers. Resilience has become an important goal for cities, particularly in the face of climate change, natural disasters and now, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and Samagra is poised to be at the forefront of this paradigm shift in viewing healthcare. Our endeavour would be to establish Samagra as a one-stop centre for innovative and scalable urban health solutions in India.

The project has formulated three strategic approaches:

Providing technical assistance at the national, state, and city levels to strengthen urban health systems through the convergence of public and private stakeholders involved in urban design and planning for efficient delivery of primary health care. Samagra will support in the development of governance models enabling urban resilience by integrating sectors such as sanitation, livelihoods and nutrition with primary healthcare.

Operating as an accelerator hub to build upon evidence-based approaches with the local implementing partners (non- profit or for profit). The project endeavors to scale proven and promising interventions that increase demand for RMNCH+A, TB and Covid information, products and services. Samagra will aim at embedding these high impact interventions in urban health programs, such as Smart City, PMJAY and NHM.

Incubating innovative solutions that address barriers to improving primary health outcomes in cities by instituting a mechanism to identify and mentor implementable solutions that have the potential to promote a paradigm shift in urban healthcare. These innovative solutions supported by the Samagra Incubation Hub for Urban Health (SIHU) will be able to transform traditional approaches and address inequities and inequality of care for the urban poor and vulnerable. SIHU will also incubate solutions that address the social determinants of health, such as gender based violence, air pollution, WASH and malnutrition.
