Job Description
We invite applications from suitable candidates for the position of a Junior Research Fellow for the Coral Reef component as part of the Marine Theme in the MOEFCC’s Long-Term Ecological Observatories (LTEO) programme on biodiversity and climate change. This position demands that the candidate be a highly self-motivated, independent and enterprising individual who will fulfill the following responsibilities of this position:
- Collect in-water data on benthic cover, coral community composition and environmental parameters affecting coral reefs using SCUBA diving.
- Assist in planning and executing project activities including field work, lab work, research logistics and data processing.
- Ensure timely completion of the project deliverables and targets including data entry, analysis and report writing.

Job Description:
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Collect data on community composition and demography of hermatypic coral communities at the LTEO sites in the Andaman Islands, database maintenance, data analysis and report writing.
- Assist in planning, organising and coordinating fieldwork and logistics and liaise with other researchers and thematic areas of the LTEO.
Education Qualifications/Required Skills & Experience
- A Master’s degree in natural sciences, preferably in marine biology, ecology or zoology.
- A valid SCUBA certification (at least to the level of a PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent).
- Some field and lab work experience and knowledge of collecting environmental and water quality data, preferably in coral reefs or related marine ecosystems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Candidates with the following additional skills will be given preference:
- Quantitative skills including statistics and study design along with working knowledge of R and GIS.
- Rescue diver certification and/or a minimum of 50 dives.
- Basic knowledge of coral reef ecosystems and interest in taxonomy and natural history of coral reefs.
- Planning and organisation skills, ability to pay attention to detail and multitasking abilities.
