Job Description
WorldVeg is seeking a Project Team Leader and Trainer to lead the vegetable research, training and extension activities of the JOHAR project in the state of Jharkhand, India. Increasing incomes from vegetables will play a major role in the JOHAR comprehensive rural development project funded by the World Bank. The vegetable activities will focus on improving seed and seedling systems, promoting good agricultural practices and improving postharvest handling and marketing. This is a nationally recruited position that will work closely with the research team at WorldVeg regional headquarters in Hyderabad, India
Job Responsibilities
- Provide leadership in coordinating the implementation on-farm vegetable demonstrations of improved varieties and seedling production systems, good agricultural practices, integrated pest management and postharvest management.
- Lead a team of Agronomist, Scientific Officer, Finance Officer, Technical Officers serving in different project districts across Jharkhand to implement on-farm trials, run training programs and to scale up innovations in vegetable production.
- Organize and implement training programs to strengthen the capacity of local partners in carrying out research and extension activities for vegetable growers.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships and communication links with the JOHAR management team, WorldVeg regional headquarters and other project partners to ensure effective field implementation of improved vegetable cultivation practices.
- Develop extension training materials, prepare project progress reports, annual/seasonal work-plans, financial reports and presentations as needed by project stakeholders. Attend the donor meetings as and when required.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Masters/PhD in Horticulture/Agriculture with at least 15-20 years’ experience in coordinating and implementing sustainable Horticulture programs, preferably vegetable crops.
Competencies:
- Proven experience in effectively leading teams, and working closely with public and private sector partners to implement vegetable research and development projects.
- Extensive experience in conducting training and extension programs for farmers.
- Extensive experience in commercial vegetable research and extension work.
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to conduct, monitor, analyze and evaluate experimental trials and communicate results.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Hindi (knowledge of regional languages would be an advantage) and an excellent team player.
- Proficiency in the use of various software applications (MS Word, MS Excel) and good knowledge and practical experience in managing on-farm and on-station trials.
- Energetic, entrepreneurial and enthusiastic personality with an urge to improve agricultural systems for the benefit of smallholder farmers.
