Programme Objectives

The MA programme seeks to introduce students to the study of policy-making and implementation processes to create improved understanding of events happening in society. It will help students in sharpening their powers of analysis and judgment. The programme will contribute to acquisition of analytical skills that can help in informing policy choices. For this reason democratic context of policy choices will be explored foregrounding the issues of liberty and justice. In addition, the MA programme should equip the students with skills to evaluate and assess programmes and projects.

The core courses will have three streams: a. introduction to concepts and theories of substantive aspects, b. integrative understanding of policy-making in the framework of law and institutions of governance and democracy, and c. introduction to evaluation methods and democratic accountability mechanisms.

Structure of the Programme

  • The MA programme will be taught in 4 semesters over a period of two years.
  • There will be 22 taught courses with a thesis which will be equivalent to 2 taught courses.      
  • There will be 14 core courses, 8 elective courses and a thesis equivalent to 2 core courses.
  • Six courses will be taught in the first three semesters and in the fourth semester there will be four courses allowing time for thesis writing.
  • Each student will be assigned a faculty mentor to advise on the choice of electives and topic of thesis.

Out of the 8 elective courses, students have to take at least 4 courses from the list given below. Other 4 courses can be chosen from those taught in other departments/scools of the University.
