About the Organization

Created in 2004, EJN is now a truly global network of reporters and media outlets in virtually every region of the world.

Environmental and climate change reporting is now more urgent than ever, but journalists face myriad and mounting challenges in covering these topics. The media industry is in crisis, and misinformation is on the rise. Reporters working for cash-strapped news agencies often don't have the resources to research a story properly; freelancers, even less so. That’s where EJN comes in.

Our mission is to strengthen local journalism that serves communities and policymakers on the frontlines of climate and environmental crises, enabling them to shape solutions, hold power to account and demand action.

About the Fellowship

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a four-month fellowship program designed specifically for rural journalists from all beats, desks and formats who want to improve their coverage of climate change.

For 24 sessions spread over 24 weeks, we will be delving into both climate science and impact, and also effective communication of these concepts. The fellowship will be a series of online workshops, pitching clinics and idea-storming sessions, curated to help us find and execute climate stories around us. Most important, it'll help us find community - colleagues to work with, ideate with and support.

The program will be divided into two broad categories: Mandatory Sessions – These are required and must be attended by all selected applicants & Optional Sessions – These can be attended based on your availability.

Whether mandatory or optional, each session will explore climate and its intersection with another issue. We strongly encourage you to make time for the optional sessions as well.

More importantly, the fellowship is an opportunity to create and sustain a community of grassroots reporters who are keen to cover climate stories, and are constantly learning from and motivating each other.

This training opportunity requires a mutual commitment.

Towards the end of the fellowship, we will announce story grants of Rs 15,000 for a select group of reporters from the training cohort. The grants will be awarded based on your commitment to the fellowship and the strength of the story ideas you pitch at that stage. More details will be shared once the training begins.

Eligibility

  • You must be a journalist who has been consistently covering stories from a rural area or tier-2/tier-3 cities for at least two years. This program is open to both freelancers and staffers working with hyperlocal publications. Please note: We will not be accepting applicants affiliated with advocacy groups, activist organisations, or NGOs.
  • Your Statement of Purpose is an important part of the application process. this will allow us to understand your current knowledge and expectations from this programme. In our experience, honest SOPs go a long way. Artificial Intelligence, not so much!
  • We encourage the use of AI only for translation. We would reject applications completely written using ChatGPT or any other AI model, especially the Statement of Purpose.
  • It’s absolutely fine if climate journalism is new to you. Climate intersects with almost every beat, and our goal is to help rural journalists uncover and report on those intersections.
  • A strong commitment to attending all mandatory training sessions is essential. Our team is putting in considerable effort to design a valuable learning experience. Trainers will be dedicating their time and sharing their knowledge to make climate journalism more accessible for rural reporters. All we ask is that you match that dedication with a genuine commitment to learn and not treat this program as a mere obligation.
