About the Organization
Based on a government mandate, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) supports scientific research in all academic disciplines – from chemistry to medicine to sociology. At the end of 2024, the SNSF was funding around 6000 projects involving 22,000 researchers. This makes us the leading Swiss organisation for the promotion of scientific research.
To ensure its independence, the SNSF was established in 1952 as a private foundation. Its core task is the evaluation of research proposals. In 2024, it awarded 960 million francs to the most promising project proposals under its regular funding schemes. We allocated a further 189 million for the Horizon Europe transitional measures. By awarding public research money based on the principle of competition, the SNSF contributes to the high quality of research in Switzerland.
In close collaboration with higher education institutions and other partners, the SNSF strives to create the best possible conditions for the development and global interconnectedness of Swiss research. It pays particular attention to the promotion of early-career researchers. In addition, it accepts evaluation mandates to help ensure that large third-party-funded research initiatives deliver the highest scientific quality.
About the Grant
The SNSF, together with its Indian partners, is launching three calls for Joint Research Projects (JRPs) at the beginning of 2026.
On 8 January 2026, the SNSF launched two calls for proposals with different thematic focuses:
Joint call with the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) -
This call invites the submission of joint research projects (JRPs) in the field of geoscience research on natural hazards in mountain regions. The SNSF will cover the costs of projects in Switzerland and the MoES will cover those in India. Projects with durations of three to four years may be submitted; the maximum contribution is CHF 300,000 for three years and CHF 400,000 for four years. The SNSF and the MoES will fund around 10 projects, provided that enough high-quality proposals are received.
Joint call with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) -
The call with the ICSSR is aimed at researchers who would like to work on social science issues together with partners in India. The call document defines the thematic framework within which projects can be submitted.
For this call, the SNSF will also cover the costs of the Swiss parts of the projects, while the ICSSR will cover those in India. Only proposals with a maximum duration of three years and a requested funding amount of no more than CHF 300,000 may be submitted. The SNSF and the ICSSR can fund a total of 10 projects, provided that enough qualified proposals are submitted.
The conditions for participation and all relevant information can be found in the respective call documents. Details of the third call will be published shortly. On 2 February 2026, the SNSF is launching a third call with India, with a focus on One Health.
Up to ten projects with a duration of up to four years can be funded. The maximum budget for the Swiss side is CHF 400,000 per project. As with the other two calls, Switzerland and India will each bear the costs for the researchers in their respective countries.
