Job Description
Inclusion Economics India Centre (IEIC) is hiring a Director of Strategic Initiatives (with final title reflecting experience) to join our senior leadership team in New Delhi, India. The successful candidate will primarily concentrate on leading the Women in Leadership in Economics (WiL) initiative, working alongside Yale Inclusion Economics and Indian academic stakeholders, as described below. We anticipate that, over time, the Director will take on additional leadership responsibilities related to strategic and policy initiatives at IEIC.
IEIC, in collaboration with Yale Inclusion Economics (YIE), has just launched the Women in Leadership in Economics (WiL) initiative, an ambitious, collaborative effort to generate systems change to advance Indian women's leadership in economics and policy. A key component of the WiL initiative is to support the career progression and success of female economists and economics students by improving access to relevant information and strengthening institutional access to mentorship and professional networks. Our initiative has partnered with a set of Indian institutions, encompassing universities and professional organisations, aiming to reshape institutional norms and structures to promote women’s advancement in the economics profession, and create leadership opportunities that will better enable women to contribute to evidence-based economic policy in India
The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about economics research as a lever for policy impact, and about overcoming barriers that keep women from effectively contributing to that effort. The successful candidate will lead a team at IEIC to deliver on the goals of the program. She/he/they will collaborate with the initiative’s Steering Committee, made up of experts in the field, and the senior leadership team across IEIC and YIE, to carry out the activities of the initiative.
Job Responsibilities
Women In Leadership (WiL) Initiative:
- You will take on the pivotal role of leading the Women in Leadership in Economics initiative, including anchoring the initiative design and delivery, hiring and mentoring outstanding staff to work on the team, and collaborating with the institutions, IEIC and Yale IE-linked teams to improve women’s representation in economics. These aspects of the job are described in more detail below.
WiL Program Design and Delivery:
- In collaboration with the Executive Director (ED) and Associate Director of Research (ADR) at IEIC, YIE senior leadership and the WiL steering committee, you will establish a multi-year work plan to achieve the initiative’s goals.
- You will serve as the lead on institutional partnerships, and academic & professional body stakeholder relationships to deliver on the objectives of the initiative.
- You will, together with WiL team members, own, refine and implement the work plan that enables accomplishment of the initiative’s strategic aims. This will include working with partner institutions through advising and capacity building to encourage the use of rigorous, evidence-based decision- making in their departments, institutionalizing practices to make the WiL engagement effective. Implementation will also require identifying key enablers and barriers in the partner institutions to making progress on the stated goals, and strategizing on how to best work with enablers while addressing the barriers.
- You will work with other members of the leadership team and the steering committee to develop and implement a communications strategy to inform and drive progress on the WiL initiative.
- You will lead the development and implementation of the learning, measurement and evaluation (LME) strategy for the WiL initiative. This will involve setting up strong systems for learning, measurement and evaluation, establishing internal and external feedback loops, and providing inputs into data analysis for internal decision-making and sharing with the leadership team.
WIL HR:
- You will work closely with IEIC’s senior leadership team and the Senior HR Manager to hire, manage, and mentor a team drawn from current as well as newly hired staff, to support initiative and related activities.
Financial Responsibilities:
- You will engage in strategic budget management - work collaboratively with the ED and Associate Director of Finance (ADF), and YIE leadership on long-term financial planning, financial decision-making around resource allocation and prioritisation, and risk management.
Education Qualification/Required Skills &Experience
- Master’s degree in economics, political science, public policy, international development or a related field. A PhD in any of these areas is desirable, but not a must.
- Relevant experience, including progressively senior management experience overseeing direct reports and directly managing program activities in India and experience working with policymakers.
- Entrepreneurial bent, with a proven ability to get things done in ambiguous or unstructured environments.
- Strong interpersonal and social skills, and willingness to interact with a wide range of individuals including research staff, academics, donors, policy counterparts, etc.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, propose solutions, and build consensus for collaboratively developed solutions in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Capacity to maintain an organized and structured work style in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment across multiple time zones.
- Willingness to travel to visit project sites and represent our work to external stakeholders on a regular basis. NB: This position will be based in New Delhi, India, with frequent travel throughout the country. Occasional international travel will be required.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working in India in development economics research and/or policy, including with randomized controlled trials.
- NB: Salary is benchmarked to leadership positions to peer organisations.
