Charkha is a non-profit organization that uses the power of communication to further the inclusion of the disadvantaged, rural communities. Founded in 1994 by visionary social activist Sanjoy Ghose, Charkha works towards strengthening the leadership skills among adolescent girls, youth and social workers in the remotest villages through information, knowledge and development communication tools. Charkha’s Development, Gender and Communication workshops build their understanding of intersectionality that they utilise to highlight their socio-economic development challenges of the disadvantaged, rural communities conveniently ignored by the mainstream.
Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Finance Manager to lead and strengthen Charkha’s financial systems and practices. This is a strategic role, balancing financial management, compliance, donor reporting, and support to field teams. The ideal candidate should bring a mix of technical expertise, analytical ability, integrity, and a collaborative spirit aligned with the values of grassroots development.
Job Responsibilities
Financial Planning & Management
- Prepare and monitor annual and project-specific budgets in collaboration with the CEO and program teams.
- Lead financial forecasting and scenario planning.
- Ensure optimal fund utilization aligned with organizational goals, donor requirements and both FC and non-FC rules and regulations.
Financial Operations
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including bookkeeping, fund disbursements, reimbursements, bank reconciliations, and cash flow management.
- Supervise the work of the accountant and ensure timely and accurate entries in Tally or other accounting software.
- Ensure timely payments of salaries, reimbursements, vendors, taxes, and statutory dues.
Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure timely filing of statutory returns including TDS, GST, FCRA, and Income Tax.
- Coordinate and liaise with external auditors for statutory and donor audits.
- Maintain compliance with all relevant laws and regulations applicable to NGOs, including FCRA, Income Tax Act, and CSR provisions.
Donor & Grant Management
- Manage donor reporting requirements by preparing and submitting accurate financial reports as per deadlines.
- Track grant-wise expenses and ensure fund utilization aligns with approved budgets.
- Support proposal development with financial inputs and budget creation.
Policy Development & Implementation
- Support the development and implementation of finance, procurement, and travel policies.
- Ensure systems and controls are adhered to across the organization.
- Provide financial insights to inform organizational decisions.
Team Coordination and Capacity Building
- Supervise finance and admin staff; build their capacities in financial systems.
- Work closely with field teams to strengthen their understanding of budgeting, documentation, and finance protocols.
- Participate in cross-team planning and reviews to ensure alignment of financial and programmatic goals.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Postgraduate in Commerce/Finance/Accounting or related field.
- Minimum 5–7 years of relevant work experience in the development/non-profit sector.
- Strong knowledge of Tally, MS Excel, budgeting, and financial management systems.
- Experience in managing FCRA, CSR, and multi-donor grants preferred.
- Prior experience in handling statutory and donor audits is essential.
- Excellent communication (written and spoken) in English and Hindi.
