About EPIC-India

Energy Policy Institute at UChicago (EPIC) is a research center at the department of economics at the University of Chicago, working on energy and environmental policy and economics. EPIC’s India center is based out of UChicago Center in Delhi. The foundational goal of the center is to match cutting edge research with real world impact, and to do this we work across disciplines and closely with government partners. We have ongoing engagements with Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, the Central Pollution Control Board, the SPCBs of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu; and the State Energy Departments and discoms in Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Karnataka; and the NITI Aayog.

Job description

EPIC-India (Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate (RA) to implement a randomized evaluation in Bihar, India. The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge research in the fields of energy and environmental economics. The RA will join a team of world class researchers from leading universities. Read more about EPIC-India’s work and projects here. The RA will work closely with a Research Manager who will guide and supervise the RA in her/his various tasks.

The RA will also work closely with academic researchers at EPIC-India, the University of Chicago, and the University of California, Berkeley, and others, as well as the implementing partner to ensure that the research design is executed correctly. Major job responsibilities include:

1. Project management: Oversee day-to-day implementation of the research design in close collaboration with the implementing partner.

2. Partner management: Build and maintain close and collaborative working relationships with the implementing partner and other organizations, as appropriate.

3. Data collection, compliance, and security: Supervise data collection and data-entry to ensure good data quality. Ensure that the project complies with IRB and EPIC-India data collection and security protocols with the help of the Research Manager.

4. Data cleaning and analysis: Assist with data cleaning and preliminary data analysis.

5. Documentation: Assist in the preparation of documents and presentations for donor reporting as well as dissemination activities.

6. Research design: Designing survey questionnaires, conducting qualitative research, running pilot exercises, refining study design and survey instruments.

7. Team management: Recruit, train, and supervise both field-based and data operations teams consisting of project assistants, field managers, field-based surveyors, data entry operators and other field and office staff.

8. Any other task as assigned by the Research Manager or PIs.



 Bachelor’s degree in public policy, economics, statistics, environmental science, engineering or a similar field is required; advanced degree is strongly preferred


  • A minimum of two years of relevant work experience required; advanced academic degree may count towards work experience
  • Experience with and/or academic training in statistical analysis and research methods required
  • Experience working with Stata or R required; experience with Python would be a plus
  • Familiarity with randomized controlled trials/clinical trials/quasi-experiments preferred
  • Familiarity with energy and environment sectors would be a plus


  • Ability to work independently in rural field locations
  • Extraordinary attention to detail
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills along with Strong quantitative skills
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English. Conversational skills in Hindi, Bengali, Bihari would be a plus.
  • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations
  • Ability to deal with unstructured and changing environments
  • Knowledge and understanding of energy and environmental policy literature is required; work/research experience in the area is strongly preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data in a simple and straightforward way for non-technical audiences required
