National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences is a premier medical institution located in Bangalore, India. NIMHANS is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country, the institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Three Months Certificate course in Social Work in Child and Adolescent Mental Health:  

The WHO framework indicates that only 10 to 12% of children require tertiary care interventions whereas almost 30% of children require psychological interventions in the community. Furthermore, 100%of children and adolescents require universal preventive and promote interventions. This cadre of persons will be trained in:

• Identifying at risk/vulnerable children in community provide them primary interventions and refer them to the tertiary care for appropriate institutional interventions
• Learning and practicing various social work methods to work with children and their families such as case work, case management, group work interventions, community organization etc.
• Providing basic and primary psychological interventions for children and adolescents and their families in the community with the community-based resources
• Providing basic and primary psychological interventions for children and adolescents and their families in the community with the community-based resources
• Enhancing support systems in the community to address the psychosocial problems of children and adolescents such as supporting child welfare committees, etc
• To carry out the research in the area of child and adolescent metal health

This certificate course aims at enhancing the capacities of the persons interested in working in the field of child and adolescent mental health through demonstrations, field visits and discussions. The candidates will provide with the reading materials for their reference. The candidates will receive the training from various multidisciplinary team experts of child and adolescent psychiatry unit

Multidisciplinary team expert:

The course candidates will be primarily supervised by faculties of psychiatric social work however, they will also be mentored by other multidisciplinary team members i.e. faculty from Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Department of Nursing, and so on. The multidisciplinary mentoring will help the candidates to enhance their knowledge on holistic care in children and adolescent mental health

Structure of the course:

The candidates will be selected based on the eligibility criteria prescribed below:

• Candidates will be mentored b the multidisciplinary team of child and adolescent psychiatry
• Candidates will be exposed to various psychiatric social work services inside the NIMHANS campus as well as community based services and programs
• Candidates are expected to participate in academic programs, clinical rounds, in-patient ad out-patient clinical services, and community-based programs
• Candidates are expected to produce course log boo ad course assignments prior to the completion of the course
• Candidates will be given certificate on the successful completion of the course

Future Directions:

There is significant need of trained manpower in the field of child and adolescent mental health not only in the tertiary care setting but also in community. NIMHANS being Institute of National Importance and having pioneered in child and adolescent psychiatry services, this course will benefit social workers who are keen to work in the field of child and adolescent mental health. They are hopeful and they will strive for extension of this course to the SAARC countries on successful completion of this course for next one or two years

Eligibility:

• The course is open to those who have obtained Master’s Degree in social work (full time), from a university recognized by UGC and approved by NIMHANS, securing not less than 55% marks in the aggregate of the Master’s degree as a whole
• Direct candidates, those deputed from other organization and sponsored candidates from State/Central govt./ Armed forces/Other NGO’s can be admitted to the course
