About the Organization

Social Marketing Quarterly (SMQ) is a scholarly, internationally-circulated journal focused exclusively on the theoretical, research and practical issues confronting academics, practitioners, policymakers and others involved in behavior change for the social good. SMQ is for professionals who use (or want to use) marketing principles, strategies and techniques to change individual behavior and benefit society. SMQ contains research/evaluation studies, case studies, commentaries, editorials, and book reviews on the use of social marketing to protect the environment, increase health, safety and well-being, and address other issues to increase the social good.

SMQ publishes original work and fosters a cooperative exploration of ideas and practices that promote innovative strategies. The journal occasionally publishes special issues pertaining to current topics of interest and relevance to the social marketing community.

About the Call for Papers

We are looking for high-quality case studies that highlight how applied social marketing has resulted in positive results in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SMQ is publishing a special collection of case studies that demonstrate the successes, benefits, and lessons learned from using social marketing to contribute to the SDGs and reinforce the need for evidence of impact.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development sets out an ambitious plan for transforming our world (United Nations, 2015a, p. 11). The agenda includes 17 SDGs, global goals to attain fair and sustainable health at every level and promote prosperity while protecting the planet. Despite global commitment to the SDGs, progress has been slow. Of the 17 SDGs, just two — eliminating preventable deaths among newborns and under-fives and getting children into primary schools — were close to being achieved before the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of climate change, the war in Ukraine, a weak global economy, and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted weaknesses and delayed progress towards achieving the SDGs. As a result, with only six years left until the 2030 deadline, it is very much now seen as a “now or never” scenario.

If the SDGs are to be achieved, wide-scale behavior change is essential. Social marketing has been used to support the SDGs through the development of more just, equitable, human-centered and effective programs and policies. SMQ wants to showcase such examples to ensure that the value of using social marketing is recognized and promoted.

The SDGs include No poverty (SDG 1), Zero hunger (SDG 2), Good health and well-being (SDG 3), Quality education (SDG 4), Gender equality (SDG 5), Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), Reduced inequalities (SDG 10), Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), Climate action (SDG 13), Life below water (SDG 14), Life on land (SDG 15), Peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16), Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

We are looking for researchers and practitioners to present case examples of programs that have aimed to support the SDGs, emphasizing impact and lessons learned for potential upscaling of efforts. Irrespective of which SDG is the focus of the case study we encourage authors to follow SMQ’s template for reporting case studies.
