About the Organization

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year of 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country. The Council aims to:

• Review the progress of social science research and give advice to its users;
• Sponsor social science research programmes and projects and administer grants to institutions and individuals for research in social sciences;
• Institute and administer scholarships and fellowships for research in social sciences;
• Indicate areas in which social science research is to be promoted and adopt special measures for development of research in neglected or new areas;
• Give financial support to institutions, associations, and journals engaged in social science research;
• Arrange for technical training in research methodology and to provide guidance for research;
• Co-ordinate research activities and encourage progrmmes for interdisciplinary research;
• Develop and support centers for documentation services and supply of data;
• Organize, sponsor, and finance seminars, workshops and study groups;
• Undertake publication and assist publication of journals and books in social sciences;

Advise the Government of India on all matters pertaining to social science research as may be referred to it from time to time; and take such measures generally as may be necessary from time to time to promote social science research and its utilization.

About the Fellowship

ICSSR invites applications from Indian scholars under its Senior Fellowship Scheme for the year 2024-2025.

Senior Fellowships are awarded to senior Indian researchers who have made significant contribution in the field of Social Sciences through projects/ publications, including books published by reputed publishers and research papers in peer-reviewed journals with high impact factor.  The studies made by the Senior Fellows are expected to have the potential to contribute in the development of the nation by providing evidence-based solution to current and future challenges in different fields.

The Post-Doctoral Fellowships for the Financial Year 2024-25 shall be awarded in the following areas of Social Sciences: Economics / Development Studies, Management, Commerce, Sociology/Social Work, Social Anthropology, Culture Studies, Sanskrit Studies, Socio-Philosophical Studies, Sociolinguistics, Gender Studies, Health Studies, Political Science, International Relations/ Geopolitics, Public Administration, Diaspora Studies, National Security and Strategic Studies, Education, Social Psychology, Legal Studies, Social and Human Geography, Environmental Studies, Modern Social History, Media Studies, Library Science, Language Studies, Indian Knowledge Systems.

Research Proposals that span across disciplinary boundaries also fall within the areas of the Council’s interest.

Duration and Value:

• Senior Fellowship is a full-time research engagement.
• The duration of fellowship shall be for two years and no extension will be considered.
• The value of fellowship is Rs.45,000/- per month and contingency grant of Rs.40,000/- per annum and will be in line with the directives of the Ministry of Education from time to time.
• Under Salary protection, a fellow is entitled to salary and allowances admissible as per rules and contingency grant. However, special allowances like children education allowance, medical reimbursement, LTC, etc. are not admissible from the ICSSR. The parent institution may, however, pay/reimburse the same as per its rule.
• The ICSSR shall also pay the leave salary and pension contribution or contribution towards CPF and gratuity for the period for which he/she holds the ICSSR’s fellowship as per rules of the parent institution.

Eligibility

• The scholar should be an Indian citizen and should not be less than 45 years of age and not more than 70 years of age as on the last date of application.
• The scholar must possess Ph.D. Degree and have, in the opinion of the ICSSR, the necessary competence to conduct research in social sciences or allied disciplines in addition to having outstanding research publications, including books published by reputed publishers and/or research papers in peer-reviewed journals with high impact factor, at the time of application.
• A fellow must affiliate himself/herself to UGC recognized Universities / Deemed-to-be-Universities, Institutes of National Importance as defined by MoE / UGC, and ICSSR Research Institutes. Funds are disbursed through the affiliating/administering institution.
• Faculties with regular service in public funded universities/colleges and research institutes getting UGC pay-scales may be considered for pay protection in exceptionally meritorious cases, which is to be decided by the Expert Committees of the ICSSR. The Expert Committees of the ICSSR also reserve the right to convert a fellowship proposal into a Project Proposal.

Applicants are required to read the guidelines carefully before submitting their online application forms. The research proposal should be submitted only in the format attached with the application form.  No separate research proposal is to be attached.  Applicants are also advised to apply well before the last date in order to avoid last moment rush. The applications can be filled either in English or in Hindi (Arial/Mangal Unicode font will be used in Devanagari script to fill application form in Hindi).
