About the Organization

Started in 2003 by Sonia Mackwani, Touching Lives is a non-profit organization based in Mumbai, India. We work towards Learning and Healing of children and people of slum communities, supporting them to become independent learners.

About the Fellowship

As a Touching Lives Fellow, you will be teaching and mentoring children / youth. The children come from challenging socio-economic environments. The role involves ‘developing curriculum’ based on the in-house learning-teaching model of Touching Lives and teaching English, mindfulness and value education through activity-based methods. The fellow provides a safe environment for quality education and mental health. The Fellow gets an opportunity to learn life-long hands-on tools of the Self-Work* Model through which they can engage in their own self-healing and self-development.

Project structure:

Currently, the team is working in hybrid mode, conducting some of the sessions with the children online on Zoom and some in-person. For 2024-25, we will continue hybrid model until we rebuild the physical learning space. The learning center is in Dahisar, Mumbai.

Fellowship open for

The Fellowship Batch of 2024–26 is open for Beginners program, Discovery program and Dream program.

The Beginners program and The Discovery program aim to provide activity-based supplementary education to children living in slum communities in Dahisar and Borivali (suburbs of Mumbai). The age-group of Beginners program children is 6-9 years, and the age-group for Discovery program children is 12-16 years.

The Dream Program provides online education support to college-going students. The students are from slums communities in different parts of Mumbai, Delhi, small villages of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, not limited to a specific geography. The program is open for youth from any part of India living in challenging socio-economic background. The program aims to develop the skills these students need for the next steps in continuing higher education or seeking employment.

The Fellow commits for 2 Years of teaching, mentoring – assisting the educational development and mental health of the students. The curriculum includes – English, Life-skills, Healing and Self-work*, Technology, Global Perspective.

Eligibility

Academic Qualification – Bachelors in Education, ECCD, Experienced educators, Masters in Psychology, Human Development, Literature who are open to new teaching methods and mentoring.  Teaching experience preferred. Candidates who are passionate about education and transforming lives through education.

Skills and Qualities – Good command over English language, Multi– tasking, Passionate about working with children & youth and about teaching, Wisdom to make students independent thinkers, Willing to creatively and compassionately resolve difficulties, Participative in the learning and healing journey of self and team-mates, Leadership qualities and ready to relentlessly support the student’s journey of transformation.
