About the Organization

WASH Institute has been strengthening the capacity, and skills of professionals involved in WASH sector across India through intensive trainings since 2008. We are a sector partner of National Jal Jeevan Mission and support the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, in implementing Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban and Gramin). Through its skill and capacity building programs, WASH Institute has trained more than 11000 professionals across the country.

Background to the Training

With the success of the Swacch Bharat Mission (SBM), Government of India is now not only looking towards ensuring the country remains open defecation free but also is provided with adequate wastewater and FSSM infrastructure. FSSM is an approach that ensures excreta collected in septic tanks and pits is regularly emptied, transported, treated, and reused. Government of India is urging local bodies to use this approach across the country, as it is a cost – effective and quick system to implement. During the first phase of SBM, the instrumental role played by NGOs and CBOs in supporting the local government to eradicate open defecation demonstrated true potential in implementing sanitation programs. Along the same line, NGOs and CBOs can embark upon a new journey to sustain open defecation free status by extending support to urban and rural local bodies to plan, design and implement FSSM systems.

Why this training?

WASH Institute in collaboration with USAID and BMGF has launched this initiative as an effort to encourage NGOs, CBOs, social enterprises and SHGs working in the field of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to take up activities related to FSSM and strengthen local governments to achieve ODF ++ goals. Through these series of trainings, they can learn the basics of FSSM – understand its need, the approach behind it and what makes it successful.

How will the training benefit?

  • The training will help development sector professionals understand the FSSM approach
  • Serve as a platform for professionals who have worked on FSSM, to learn from each other’s experiences
  • Help understand the impact FSSM can create for communities (especially those which are marginalized and underprivileged) and understand how they can implement these solutions
  • Participants will be guided towards finding grants and funds that can support them in implementing FSSM at community, village, town and city level
