The Culture & Animals Foundation aims to advance animal advocacy through intellectual and artistic expression.

The Culture & Animals Foundation (CAF) believes our future survival depends on developing a worldview that embraces a deep understanding of animals as deserving of our respect and care. We are inspired by the creativity, compassion, and commitment of artists and scholars who strive to awaken this realization in society.

Since its founding in 1985, CAF has stood uniquely at the intersection of creativity and scholarship, dedicated to transforming society’s relationship with nonhuman animals. CAF’s hundreds of funded projects have explored the entire cultural language of animal rights—in the humanities and social sciences; in lectures, dissertations, books, and presentations; and through painting, music, dance, film, photography, spoken word, poetry, and drama.

About the Grant

The Culture & Animals Foundation (CAF) provides annual grants to scholars and artists using their intellect, creativity, and compassion to build a deeper understanding of human–animal relationships and a greater respect for animal rights. Academic and artistic projects will be considered in three categories:

• Research: Scholarly projects about animal advocacy and its cultural roots and impact;
• Creativity: Original work by artists and thinkers that expresses positive concern for animals.
• Performance: Public performances and exhibitions, including the products of our research and creative grants, to raise awareness of animal advocacy.

CAF accepts grant applications from any country.

The number of grants varies from year to year. On average, CAF awards fewer than 20 grants annually.

Individual grants normally are awarded in amounts ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. In some rare cases, CAF may elect to award partial funding to a grant applicant, which would cover a portion of the requested amount. CAF encourages applicants to apply for funding from other organizations, both before and after applying for a CAF grant, if the project scope and budget require.

CAF accepts proposals from January 1 to January 31 of each year.
