About the Organization

The International Climate Initiative is one of the key instruments of the German Federal Government to support international climate action and biodiversity. The IKI supports solution strategies in developing and emerging countries that seek to achieve sustainable change.

About the Grant

The IKI Thematic Calls address current challenges in climate action, adaptation and biodiversity conservation on an annual basis. For these challenges, the respective IKI ministries define new thematic priorities as a basis for submission of project outlines. The financing volume provided by the IKI can range from 5 to 20 million EUR per project depending on the thematic priority.

Thematic priorities:

The following thematic priorities are available:

  • Promotion of cooperative approaches to the implementation of Art. 6: Removal activities and mobilisation of private capital (BMWK)
  • Building energy efficiency: Business models for scaling energy efficiency measures (BMWK)
  • Climate-friendly transport: Support of partner countries in the creation of foundations, strategies and specific approaches for climate action and the energy transition in transport (BMWK)
  • Scaling innovative financing solutions for the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries (BMWK)
  • Development and implementation of innovative financing models and programmes for the sustainable conservation of primary forests and the restoration of semi-natural forests (BMUV)
  • Conservation, sustainable management and restoration of critical wetlands for biodiversity and climate action (BMUV)
  • From Blue Carbon to Blue Value - locally-led approaches for coastal marine ecosystem services (BMUV)
  • Building climate resilience through protecting vulnerable watersheds in South America (BMUV)
  • Enhancing climate resilience to prevent conflict and sustain peace (Federal Foreign Office)

Project selection:

The project selection procedure takes place in two phases. In the first phase (outline phase), interested implementing organisations are invited to submit project outlines within the framework of an ideas competition. The three ministries involved in the IKI usually select one or two project outlines per thematic priority from all submissions. In the second phase (proposal phase), the organisations whose project outlines have been selected (from the first phase), are invited to submit a detailed proposal.

Eligibility

Participation in the ideas competition of IKI Thematic Calls is open to the following organisations:

  • Non-governmental organisations;
  • Universities and research institutions;
  • International intergovernmental organisations and institutions such as development banks;
  • United Nations organisations and programmes;
  • Implementing organisations of the Federal Republic of Germany;
  • Commercial enterprises.

Partner country governments and individuals cannot participate in the ideas competition.

How to Apply

The deadline for submitting project outlines for this year’s ideas competition is 18 February 2025, 4 p.m. (CET). Depending on the available funds, one to three projects per thematic priority will be selected.
