About the Organization

The Pulitzer Center, founded in 2006 and based in Washington, DC, has become a major source of support for enterprise reporting on global issues — and an innovative leader in working with schools and universities to bring those issues into classrooms everywhere.

The Center now supports over 150 reporting projects a year. Its work with the Associated Press covering the war in Yemen won a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting. The Center's projects have been among the winners each of the past three years at the RFK Awards and the Overseas Press Club; the Center itself has been recognized for best online reporting by the National Press Foundation, the National Press Club, and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Our partner Diversify Photo is a community of BIPOC and non-western photographers, editors, and visual producers working to break with the predominantly colonial and patriarchal eye through which history and the media have recorded the images of our time. Their curated database is used by editors at major media outlets seeking to expand their talent rosters.

About the Grant

The Pulitzer Center, a global organization that supports independent, innovative journalism, is now accepting applications for its new Ocean Reporting Network (ORN).

The network will establish a collaborative ecosystem of journalists around the world. Together, they will uncover the harmful and illegal practices of the fishing and extractive industries, systemic threats to marine biodiversity and coastal communities, and the supply chains facilitating global demand for the ocean’s increasingly dwindling resources. They will build on and expand coverage of chemical and noise pollution, the effects of climate change on the ocean, illegal marine wildlife trafficking, and deep-sea mining, among other issues that deserve attention.

The Ocean Reporting Fellows will work on individual and collaborative reporting projects to systematically probe the drivers of the degradation of our marine environment, as well as the socioeconomic impacts. They will have the support of a team of experienced editors at the Pulitzer Center, including a dedicated ocean editor, a research editor, and a data editor. We also support our Fellows on storytelling and audience engagement to help their stories reach targeted audiences and maximize impact.

Eligibility

• Journalists with a proven track record of environmental investigations and a solid understanding of ocean issues and the scientific, environmental, social, legal, political and commercial forces at play.
• Staff or freelance journalists working on various platforms, including print, radio, video, and multimedia. Freelance reporters must have the support of a local or international newsroom that agrees to host them and publish the work they produce during the Fellowship. 
• Team players with the experience and ability to work collaboratively across newsrooms and borders.
• Reporters willing to participate in outreach activities related to their investigations, such as events at schools and universities.
