About the Organization

The Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is the UK's learned society and professional body for geography. We advance geography and support geographers in the UK and across the world.

About the Grant

Our grants programme develops new knowledge and advances geographical science by supporting geographical research in the UK and overseas.

In 2023, with the generous support of our donors, over £180,000 of funding has been allocated to support 60 field research and school fieldwork projects, from 36 institutions. Projects are taking place in 36 countries spanning six continents. Topics range from investigating the socio-spatial impact of mining waste deposits on urban areas in Chile to reconstructing monsoon dynamics in the Eastern Himalayas from glacial and ecological change.

Grants are available for desk-based research, fieldwork and expeditions, research into teaching and learning, developing teaching resources, and for international conference attendance.

Research grants:

Each year, we support a range of field and desk-based research projects, from established researchers undertaking cutting edge fieldwork to early career academics working on smaller projects. We also support early career academics attending geographical conferences.

Expedition grants:

Fieldwork and expeditions are at the core of the Society's grants programme. Our independent travel grants support challenging and inspiring geographical journeys and expeditions all over the world.

Student grants:

Each year, the Society supports over 40 student fieldwork projects, from PhD students collecting data for their dissertation to groups of undergraduates looking to get out into the field for the first time.

Teacher grants:

Grants to support school fieldwork and expeditions, and innovation in teaching geography at secondary and higher education level.

Projects supported:

Projects we support cover a range of geographical topics, from volcano monitoring, to adaptations to climate change, to farmers' rights issues. Our grants programme has funded research undertaken in laboratories, archives and in the field in countries across all seven continents.
