About the Organization

The Rufford Foundation is a UK registered charity which funds nature conservation projects across the developing world.

The flagship Rufford Small Grants Programme gives funding to individuals working in developing countries who are starting on the ladder of conservation research and establishing pilot programmes. In some cases, if their work progresses well, these individuals may apply for one of the further grants from the Foundation. Since the Rufford Small Grants Programme was set up over 20 years ago, it has given in excess of £30 million through more than 5100 grants to projects in over 150 countries. The programme identifies scientists at the very early stages of their careers and provides targeted support to enable them to achieve their goal of making a difference in terms of conservation. Many recipients have gone on to be key influencers at a national and sometimes global level.

About the Grant

The Rufford Foundation provides funding for nature conservation projects in developing countries. The funding process is staged, with five levels of support. Grants start at £6,000 and increase to £15,000 for projects that successfully complete each stage. All applications are assessed, by the Foundation's in-house team and external specialists. Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply after 12 months.

The Rufford Foundation provides a staged funding process with five different types of grant. In sequence, these are:

  • 1st Rufford Small Grant (up to £6,000).
  • 2nd Rufford Small Grant (up to £6,000).
  • 1st Booster Grant (up to £10,000).
  • 2nd Booster Grant (up to £10,000).
  • Completion Grant (up to £15,000).

On receipt of a Completion Grant, applicants cannot apply for further funding. At this stage we expect the project we have funded to be financially stable and supported through larger-scale funders.

  • Your project must have a nature conservation focus.
  • Any species you are working on must be considered threatened.
  • Your project must not be in a developed country.
  • Your project must not be in a restricted country.
  • You should be in the early stages of your conservation career.

Please also note the following:

Our focus is supporting MSc or PhD students or those who have recently graduated from such studies, though others can apply if they fit the main criteria above. However, we do NOT fund undergraduate students.
