About the Organization

Professor Letten F. Saugstad (1925 – 2014) founded the Letten Foundation in 1986.

The Letten Foundation promotes basic research especially in the field of birth defects and certain aspects of mental illness which increases the knowledge of brain structure and function.

The Foundation also prioritizes studies of health effects associated with environmental pollution and other adversities that add to the understanding of the relation of man to his environment. The Letten Foundation gives educational grants, organizes international conferences and gives awards to outstanding achievements.

The Young Academy of Norway is an interdisciplinary organization for young researchers dedicated to research policy and dissemination.

About the Grant

The Letten Prize is a collaboration between the Letten Foundation and The Young Academy of Norway.

The purpose of the prize ‘is to recognize younger researchers’ contributions in the fields of health, development and environment in all aspects of human life’. Furthermore, ‘the prize aims to raise public awareness of how research can be used to solve global human development challenges’.

The Letten Prize of 2.5 million NOK will be awarded every other year to a young researcher under the age of 45 who conducts research aimed at solving global challenges within the fields of health, development and environment in all aspects of human life. Aimed at reaching a global audience and funding research of great societal relevance, researchers within all disciplines are encouraged apply for the prize.

Eligibility

The Letten Prize is awarded every other year to one young researcher who:

  • conducts research aimed at addressing global challenges within the fields of health, development and environment in all aspects of human life
  • has conducted excellent research of great societal relevance
  • is under 45 years old the year when the prize is awarded. That means that you must be under the age of 45 in 2025.

In addition, it is desirable that the researcher:

  • has conducted research which has impact across national borders
  • engage in/with interdisciplinary research
  • is a good disseminator

Researchers within all disciplines and of all nationalities are encouraged apply for the prize.

Candidates apply themselves by following the application guidelines outlined in the application form.
