Job Description

You will work with WRI India Sustainable Cities team and will report to the Director, WRI India Ross Center. You will be a key member of the India office, working closely with core communication staff in India and the central communication team and WRI Ross Center communications team in Washington, DC, to work on various communications activities at WRI India Cities including editorial responsibilities and managing the online content and offline communication activities for the sustainable cities program.

You will be responsible for developing and implementing editorial and online communications strategies in close coordination with WRI India’s sustainable cities program. You will contribute to maintaining content for WRI India Cities’ web and digital assets, telling the story of WRI India Cities’ across a variety of digital media  including web properties, social media assets working with program staff to create and edit content for blogs, op-eds, brand and hard copy collaterals. You will also coordinate with the various communications associate within the WRI India Ross Center initiatives and provide them guidance and leadership

You will also be a part of the WRI India core communications team and will also manage the WRI India website’s digital refresh project for the Institute as a part of digital mandate. You will make sure that online and print assets are maintained in a consistent quality and branding with WRI and WRI Ross Center’s global identity.

Job Responsibilities

Leading and coordination

  • Communications Lead for WRI India Cities will coordinate with the communications associates and initiative leaders within the team and provide overall leadership to the communications requirements of the team.
  • Lead the process of key messages development and strategically weaving them in the narrative and develop case studies for the team.
  • She/he will communicate with core communications team and work as the single-point contact.

Editorial Management

  • Work closely with WRI India communications team and Cities Director and staff to develop and execute consistent and coordinated editorial and online communications strategy to disseminate research and scale up the online engagement for WRI India Cities.
  • Support and make sure blogs and op-eds are written in an accessible and lucid language.
  • Perform quality control checks on all new and revised content. Check for length, language, flow, spelling and grammar.
  • Ensuring that all WRI India Cities’ content disbursed to the media is precise, factual, and legally sound. Also, ensuring that our branding and style guides are adhered to in all outreach materials.
  • Ideate with the teams for communications derivatives.
  • Support the team in ongoing projects, research, content generation, reports, proposals, etc.
  • Develop content for press releases, brochures and social media content
  • Create communication collaterals to facilitate the execution of offline and online events.
  • Create and manage a project-specific calendar and ensure timely dissemination of all communication materials as per program schedule.
  • Mapping media to specific work and pitching relevant stories in collaboration with the WRI India Core Comms media lead.

Website Content Management and Social Media

  • Aim to increase the quality of content as well as traffic to each of our web properties, and regularly check and update management on site metrics.
  • Contribute to web projects such as site launches, site redesigns, site retirements, user experience improvements, content planning and migration, map and interactive content development, etc.
  • Manage social media accounts especially including Twitter and Facebook, aim to integrate and grow traffic to these accounts and regularly check and update management on site metrics.
  • Track media and scholarly citations.
  • Support the researchers/writers in developing appropriate comms products and ensure pertinent dissemination and coverage.
  • Maintain online content for WRI India Cities’ web assets.
  • Work closely with WRI India communications staff to cross-promote content, templates and design.
  • Test links and tag content appropriately to support online searches.
  • Ensure that naming conventions are respected for marketing URLs, file names, page titles, headers, link text and call-to-actions.
  • Source and prepare photos for the web and ensure that they are properly captioned and credited.
  • Submit technical support tickets to our Support vendor team, prioritize and review list weekly, track issues from inception to closure and communicate outcomes back to users.

Online Communications

  • Collaborate with the designers to develop infographics and digital content and promote via social media.
  • Engage in program related outreach activities with various stakeholder groups through strong interpersonal skills.
  • Communicating and coordinating with partners and other stakeholders and liaising with relevant organizations/ platforms/ initiatives to further project goals.
  • Coordinating with local vendors for executing events in different cities as per project requirements.

Other

  • Have an understanding of graphical representation and design
  • Help maintain WRI India Cities’ digital contact database and send out email blasts.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Masters’ degree in fields such as communications, marketing, business, social or environmental studies, or English language or literature.
  • Minimum 10-12 years of full-time experience working with the following:
  • Online content management systems, particularly open-source platforms such as Drupal or WordPress and
  • Web content management on a large, public-facing website.
  • Project management experience developing websites using outside developers.
  • Familiarity with web design principles
  • Familiarity with web development workflow
  • Demonstrated understanding of SEO strategy, and the ability to brainstorm creative growth strategies for digital and social media outreach, as well as an understanding of other web best practices and standards.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced office environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with a diverse group of internal and external clients.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and editing ability to communicate complex ideas in well-organized, everyday language. (Expect to be tested for basic web writing and editing, such as writing a header, a one-paragraph abstract for a document or a teaser paragraph for a story.)
  • Experience with communications planning, publications development, marketing, social media, and other specialized communications skills.
  • Ability to simplify complex ideas, including ideating on visualizations for easy interpretation of the data for different audiences.
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, technical curiosity, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to speak as well and read and write in a regional language- preferably Kannada/Marathi
  • Basic familiarity with design software (Photoshop, InDesign, Canva or other AV/ animation software) is an added benefit
  • Previous experience in a similar editorial and digital marketing role is preferable
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to details, ability to manage multiple tasks across different teams, and take initiative.
  • Excellent writing skills in English.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with staff in other countries/time zones.
  • Ability to manage long-term projects and juggle multiple projects at the same time.
