About the Organization
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests.
Job Description
The Research Officer works under limited direction to report on a range of political and economic issues in India. Travel outside of Mumbai may be required.
Job Responsibilities
- Prepare reports and provide policy advice on a wide range of political and economic issues, with particular focus on Western India.
- Develop and maintain relationships with the private sector, academics and relevant think tanks to ensure a current and deep understanding of political, economic and security issues.
- Identify and develop profiles for key contacts in Western India for use by high-level visitors.
- Guide and assist a small team, to establish work priorities, monitor performance, provide regular feedback and identify learning opportunities.
- Represent the Consulate-General at and report on meetings, workshops and conferences as required.
- Research, including media scanning, for developing issues of interest to the bilateral relationship.
- Produce a range of written materials and policy advice including briefing, correspondence, proposals, presentations, speeches and minutes to inform activity progress, emerging issues and key risks.
- Develop and deliver official visit programs, including coordination of administrative and logistical support and outcomes.
- Assist with the development of social media content and other public diplomacy tasks.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Relevant tertiary studies and/or work experience.
- Effective written communication skills. An excellent command of English is required. Command of Marathi, Hindi or Gujarati is useful.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills to interact with senior government officials, industry representatives, academic and civil society representatives.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
