About the Organization

Since 1997, Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) has encouraged all Albertans to enjoy the outdoors. Conserving the fish, wildlife and habitat resources we enjoy makes Alberta the beautiful and balanced place it is. Conservation is about keeping our connections to the past, getting outdoors now, and most of all—shaping our quality of life as we take on tomorrow.

Get out there. Fish one of our many stocked lakes, hunt game, pick berries or mushrooms (eat only the edible ones!), birdwatch, take pictures of the things you see, skip rocks in the lake, or snowshoe through the forest. In Alberta, your options are nearly endless.

About the Grant

The Grants in Biodiversity (GIB) program supports research in biodiversity, conservation biology, ecology, and related social science approaches that ultimately aim to conserve, protect and enhance Alberta's wildlife, fish, and natural habitats:

  • increase knowledge of Alberta’s heritage of living resources, specifically the flora, fauna, and habitat.
  • promote the development of highly qualified, Alberta-based conservation biologists
  • support research and study in Alberta by graduate students

To date, the ACA Grants in Biodiversity has awarded over 6.6 million research dollars to over 620 graduate students from universities around the world. (Although graduate students do not have to attend universities in Alberta, their thesis research must be Alberta-based) Most recipients go on to careers in environmental and conservation biology. Many recipients remain in Alberta after completing their degree programs.

How to Apply

Applications open October 15, 2025 to December 1, 2025.

Applications for the ACA Grants in Biodiversity must be written by students and NOT by their supervisors. Supervisors are encouraged to advise the applicant and review the application, but the application is the work of the student. Applicants are advised to review the background of this grant program, and also the mission and values of Alberta Conservation Association.

Guidelines and Application Instructions

Advice from Adjudicators and Sample Applications

Forms: Applicants must complete two application forms: Part A and Part B. Be aware of your university's internal processes for grant application review - talk to your supervisor and research & grants office.  Allow yourself time to write the proposal, gather documentation, acquire your supervisor's signature, get internal approvals and assemble your submission. Both applications must be submitted to arrive at ACA before the deadline.
