About the Organization
Water For People India Trust (hereafter referred to as Water For People – India) came into existence in 2008. WFPIT aims to improve water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in rural areas and urban slums under the impact model – ‘Everyone Forever.’
While many water access programs focus solely on water supply, Water Source Sustainability in Yavatmal, Maharashtra project which integrates behavior change communication along with water conservation aimed at increasing the water availability mainly for drinking and agriculture purposes by adopting water conservation and recharge measures. Water For People India Trust put forth this Water Source Sustainability project for a pilot initiative, for a potential in funding partnership with TATA TRUSTS. At par with the rationale of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan and Jal Jeevan Mission, the project is proposed in Darwah block of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra.
A maximum of 15 villages with one of the objective of building water conscious communities including public institutions through innovative behaviour change interventions.
In these select villages, behaviour change communication for all the three stages of water management will be implemented to create water stewards, smart water sufficient gram panchayats, households, and public institutions during the project period.
About the Proposal
Social Art is the use of art forms as tools to address social issues. The use of Social Art is a creative and participatory process that aims at facilitating and encouraging positive individual and collective change. “Arts can not only stimulate, mobilize and entertain people, they can also very effectively trigger them to think, feel and act differently (Adison, 2014)”. Water Source Sustainability project will apply Social Art as a powerful and engaging medium to catalyze behavior change and strengthen positive social norms around Water. WFPIT “Social Art Package” for Behavior Change includes ongoing and repeated activities at three levels. Each project includes at least one of each of the following elements as a “minimum package” of delivery:
- INSPIRE!– Activities geared focusing on awareness-raising about what is the problem and the intended behaviour change of the targeted audiences1. At this level, they are involved in activities and processes leading to consciousness raising, dramatic relief and self-revaluation, and environmental re-evaluation.
- ACTIVATE! – Activities geared focusing on representing self and social liberation where targeted audiences are putting more emphasis on how norms play a role shaping what can do and think. Those who have made commitments are represented and comment using art. SA is used to express the projected intention of agreeing to that change. Art as a process is used to that intent, but also to foster social support and caring relationships learning to substitute healthy behaviours for problem behaviours.
- SUSTAIN! – Activities geared focusing on stimuli control (nudge) and removing triggers for problem behaviours. Social support is continued so that targeted audiences discuss and agree on their capacity to resist temptations (setbacks) and maintain confidence in the healthy behaviour. Through SA, the usage of role playing within institutions allows the recognition of the commitments previously made in the process of change.
The purpose of this engagement is mainly intended to create awareness and inspire rural audience of district of Yavatmal, Maharashtra under Water Source Sustainability by sharing some key messages through street theatre shows. The street theatre shows will also target specific audiences such as the community based organizations (water user committees, farmer’s clubs, joint liability groups, entrepreneurs, student’s groups, select audiences at the block and district level etc.) for awareness generation and encouraging action for positive deviance.
