Job Description

CASA Plus is supporting a grain warehousing and marketing business operating in Bihar, India. The business enables smallholder farmers to store grain at harvest, access credit against stored grain, and sell later through a digital marketplace.

The project seeks to improve understanding of smallholder supplier expectations, identify barriers to adoption of the business’s warehousing model, and define opportunities to strengthen farmer engagement and loyalty.

As part of this work, CASA Plus is commissioning a Field Research Consultant to lead farmer-level data collection in Bihar, conducting approximately 50 semi-structured interviews with smallholder farmers who are registered on or engaged with the platform.

Job Responsibilities

To collect and synthesise insights from smallholder farmers in Bihar to inform the refinements to the partner business’ farmer value proposition and operating model.

Key areas for support:

• Co-develop research tools with CASA team (interview guides, research plan etc.)
• Coordinate with local field teams to arrange interviews and manage field logistics
• Conduct ~50 semi-structured interviews with smallholder farmers
• Ensure data quality, completeness and accuracy
• Provide clean data records and concise field notes
• Participate in periodic debriefs with the CASA project team to share insights

Project deliverables:

• Interview guides and interview fieldwork plan
• Completed set of ~50 interviews (recorded via digital survey tool or structured notes)
• Cleaned dataset and/or consolidated interview summaries
• Short field summary memo highlighting key themes and observations

Ways of working:

• The CASA project team will outline objectives, project hypotheses and required deliverables in detail at the beginning of the project
• The CASA project team will support the consultant to develop required research instruments prior to field work
• The consultant will be expected to manage fieldwork, share interim findings, participate in working sessions and deliver clear, timely outputs with minimal oversight
• Field work will take place in Bihar; travel will be supported by TechnoServe and the partner agribusiness where possible

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience conducting farmer surveys in rural India, preferably in Bihar
• Understanding of smallholder grain production systems and post-harvest practices
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for farmer engagement
• Ability to manage field logistics and data quality independently
• Familiarity with digital data collection tools desirable
• Familiarity with the Bihar region
• Proficiency in English, Hindi, and local languages
