About the Organization

Social Work and Research Centre (SWRC) widely known as The Barefoot College is a community based grassroots organization founded in 1972 by Sanjit Bunker Roy aiming to make the most marginalized communities sustainable and self-sufficient. It follows a Gandhian philosophy, ensuring that the knowledge, skills, and wisdom inherent in villages drive their own development, while technology is demystified and its control decentralized, firmly placed in the hands of the rural poor.

The Barefoot College has been a hub where sustainable ideas and the practical knowledge of the rural poor are transformed into real-world solutions. This approach has generated large-scale impact across programme areas such as water, solar, education, health, environment and livelihoods. It demonstrates what is possible when the very poor are empowered to develop themselves. By combining traditional barefoot knowledge with demystified modern skills, it has trained barefoot professionals-educators, doctors, solar engineers, water handpump technicians, midwives, masons, communicators, and more-who bring transformative change to rural society.
