About the Organization

SRIJAN (Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action) is a grassroots development organization working with rural communities to strengthen their livelihoods through community-based institutions. With a presence across 4 states, SRIJAN focuses on sustainable agriculture, water resource development, women-led FPOs, and Animal Husbandry-based livelihoods, especially goat and backyard poultry rearing. We believe in building the capacities of communities and promoting local leadership, particularly among women, to drive inclusive development.

Job Description

The Project Manager – Animal Husbandry will anchor SRIJAN’s Animal Husbandry-based livelihoods strategy, providing technical leadership, field-level support, innovation, and thought partnership to programs across states. This includes strengthening Pashu Sakhi models, operationalizing Goat Resource Centres (GRCs), improving access to veterinary services, and building market linkages for small ruminant rearers.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic & Technical Leadership

  • Shape and update SRIJAN’s Animal Husbandry-based livelihoods strategy in line with field learnings and emerging trends.
  • Design and strengthen goat-based and backyard poultry-based models for ultra-poor households, especially women.
  • Introduce sustainable practices in disease prevention, feed management, breed improvement, and Housing.

Support to Field Teams

  • Guide the implementation of Animal Husbandry interventions across program geographies.
  • Develop and refine training content for Pashu Sakhis, SHG women, and farmer collectives.
  • Provide technical hand-holding support to field teams and monitor the quality of interventions.

Capacity Building

  • Mentor SRIJAN’s project teams on animal husbandry best practices.
  • Lead capacity-building programs for Pashu Sakhis and support certification or recognition of their roles.
  • Facilitate exposure visits and knowledge-sharing events across geographies.

Innovation, Documentation & Advocacy

  • Pilot innovations in feed-making units, low-cost shelters, community insurance models, etc.
  • Document success stories, field manuals, and learnings for internal and external dissemination.
  • Engage with government schemes (NRLM, AHVS, NABARD) to advocate for the integration of community models.

Partnerships & Fundraising

  • Identify and engage with donors, research institutions, private sector partners, and CSR programs to deepen and scale work.
  • Support proposal development and donor reporting related to animal husbandry projects.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience: Minimum 5–10 years in Animal Husbandry-based rural livelihood programs
  • Qualification: Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Husbandry

Required Competencies:

  • Strong domain knowledge of goat-based and poultry-based livelihood models.
  • Ability to translate technical knowledge into practical, field-applicable solutions.
  • Understanding of grassroots capacity building, participatory approaches, and social equity.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and analytical skills.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with climate-resilient Animal Husbandry practices and community-managed veterinary care models.
  • Proficiency in English, Hindi, and working knowledge of regional languages preferred.
