About the Organization

As the world began to recover from the devastation of World War II, many post-colonial countries in Asia and the Pacific began the arduous process of redefining themselves as independent nations. As a forum for regional collaboration, the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East (ECAFE) was established in Shanghai to focus on economic development and post-war reconstruction. As time moved on, ECAFE extended its membership and formed institutions key to the continued growth of the region such as the Asian Development Bank, Asian Highway Network and the Mekong Committee.

Job Description

Under the direct supervision of Programme Management Officer, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the APCTT team in exploring the intersection of AI and climate change, focus-ing on developing and applying AI-driven models and remote sensing technologies to monitor, analyse, and mitigate climate impacts.
  • Support in research, data analysis, and contributing to innovative solutions that en-hance climate resilience and sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by read-ing relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in (currently enrolled) in social science, information technology, environment science, remote sensing or other relevant field.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated interest in science, technology and innovation, renewable energy, climate change, artificial intelligence, remote sensing
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Familiarity with science, technology and innovation, renewable energy, climate change, artificial intelligence, remote sensing and related issues is desirable. Data handling skills and skills in using spreadsheets, Excel is also an asset.
