About the Organization

The South Asian Institute for Crime and Justice Studies (SAICJS) is an interdisciplinary research and policy platform that examines questions of gender, law, carcerality, and justice across South Asia. We produce research, host dialogues, and build networks around themes including women’s incarceration, organized crime, climate displacement, and criminal legal reform.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated, early-career Research and Communications Associate to support our applied research and public-facing work. This part-time role is ideal for graduate students, independent researchers, or professionals with an interest in social justice, gender, and law in South Asia. Current projects at the Institute include gendered pathways to incarceration, climate-displacement and trafficking, and carceral reforms in South Asia.

The role involves a mix of research, fieldwork assistance, and digital communications, with opportunities for learning, publication, and professional growth.

Job Responsibilities

Research and Field Support (60%)

• Conduct desk research and literature reviews on themes such as carcerality, gendered justice, trafficking, climate change and environmental displacement
• Assist in developing and refining research tools (e.g., surveys, interview guides)
• Support fieldwork preparation, coordination, and documentation as needed
• Contribute to data analysis and assist with drafting research briefs, reports, and policy content
• Identifying relevant funding opportunities

Communications and Admin (40%)

• Assist with internal and external communications, including coordination with partners and collaborators
• Manage and update the Institute’s website (WordPress) and social media channels (Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Instagram)
• Support the design and dissemination of public knowledge materials using basic tools (e.g., Canva)
• Help organize online events, webinars, and workshops

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, public policy, or related fields (Master’s preferred or in progress)
• Excellent research and writing skills
• Familiarity with gender justice, legal systems, or South Asian political and social issues
• Comfortable working with digital tools (Google Workspace, WordPress, Canva, basic data handling)
• Organized, self-motivated, and capable of working independently
• Previous experience in communications or fieldwork is a plus
