Job Description

The Senior Fundraising Consultant for India plays a pivotal role in building and expanding Global Energy Alliance's philanthropic network within India and driving fundraising efforts. This position focuses on engaging India’s community of foundations, corporate social responsibility and sustainability teams, high-networth individuals (HNWIs), philanthropic families, and localizaed offices of bilateral funders and multilaterals who are increasingly prioritizing climate and energy access solutions.

Reporting to the Chief of Partnerships and External Relations at the global level with a dotted line to Global Energy Alliance's Vice President for India will develop India-specific engagement strategies, leverage local networks and cultural contexts, and align domestic and international donor interests with Global Energy Alliance's mission. The role requires deep understanding of India's philanthropic landscape, energy and climate, and has a demonstrated history of fundraising ($5M+ per year).

Job Responsibilities

As the operational backbone of the programme, the Senior Programme Manager will have the primary responsibility for the following:

PLAN programme implementation, including the drafting and regular updating of

  • the programme overall timeline and detailed calendar,
  • the programme budget,
  • the programme’s organogram.

MANAGE, as lead, key operational aspects of implementation, including:

  • design and drafting of a Call for Expressions of Interest for national research teams,
  • design and manage the selection process for national research teams,
  • contracting of selected research teams,
  • end-to-end daily management of country-level research grants,
  • planning and execution of events, including at least one international conference.

COORDINATE across different programme stakeholders, including:

  • the programme lead (GDN President),
  • the in-house team of economist (Theory Unit),
  • the external team of economists, o up to 5 in-country research teams,
  • the programme’s Scientific Committee.

Specifically, the Senior Programme Manager will ensure rigorous quality control mechanisms are in place to regularly assess internal and external research outputs of the programme, involving in-house and external stakeholders as necessary. Quality control mechanisms will be defined in close collaboration with the President. Coordination will also include scheduling regular meetings at different levels, based on the programme organogram defined at programme kick-off, minuting the meetings, and designing systems to make information available to all parties in a timely manner. These systems will ensure that different stakeholders are aware of upcoming timelines, responsibilities and deliverables, that the latter are collected and shared as needed, and that regular feedback across the programme takes place.

  • DOCUMENT programme implementation accurately, following GDN’s existing system (G drive, Slack). The Senior Programme Manager will lead on donor reporting based on the donor contract and requirement.
  • COMMUNICATE regularly with the donor, keeping them engaged and informed about the progress of the programme as well as upcoming activities.
  • LIAISE with support teams at GDN, specifically:
  • Grant Management Specialist, about compliance with the donor requirements and policies at key moments of programme implementation (kick-off, launch of calls, contracting, dissemination of results, closure, etc.) and on a demand basis.
  • Finance, through monthly meetings to review and validate budget utilisation and update expenditure planning.
  • Communications, to develop and execute a communications strategy as early as possible in the programme implementation. This will include a mapping of key audiences and external institutional stakeholders at the global and possibly at the country level.
  • Administration and Logistics, for all contractual and legal aspects within the programme, as well as logistics in the case of events through GDN’s Travel Desk.
  • IT, as necessary.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Education: Master's degree in Business, Development Studies, Public Policy, Environment, Energy or related field from a recognized Indian or international institution.
  • Philanthropy Experience: 10+ years of experience in philanthropy, partnerships, or business development, with at least 5 years specifically focused on the Indian philanthropic ecosystem and donor landscape. At least 8 years of working in the energy sector is required
  • India Expertise: Deep understanding of India's philanthropic culture, regulatory environment (FCRA, CSR Act), and established relationships within Indian HNWI, family office, and corporate foundation networks.
  • Sector Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in climate, clean energy, or sustainable development philanthropy within India, with understanding of India's energy transition challenges and opportunities.
  • Network & Relationships: Strong existing relationships with Indian philanthropists, family offices, impact investors, and intermediaries, with proven ability to secure multi-million dollar commitments.
  • Cultural Competency: Native or near-native proficiency in Hindi and English, with deep appreciation for regional Indian cultures and business practices.
  • Regional Mobility: Willingness and ability to travel extensively within India and occasionally internationally.

  • Partnership and Relationship Building: Exceptional ability to build trust-based relationships with Indian philanthropists, understanding of family dynamics in Indian giving, and cultural sensitivity in donor engagement.
  • Communication: Outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively across diverse Indian audiences, from traditional philanthropists to tech entrepreneurs to government officials.
  • Decision-Making: Strong analytical skills with understanding of Indian market dynamics, risk assessment capabilities relevant to Indian regulatory environment, and ability to prioritize in complex, multi-stakeholder contexts.
  • Execution: Excellent project management skills adapted to Indian business culture, understanding of Indian timelines and relationship-building processes, and ability to navigate bureaucratic processes effectively.
  • Integration: Ability to work effectively across Global Energy Alliance's global matrix structure while maintaining strong local Indian relationships and cultural authenticity.
  • Leadership: Innovative thinking about India's philanthropic potential, strong negotiation skills adapted to Indian business culture, and ability to represent Global Energy Alliance authentically in Indian contexts.
  • Strategic Ability: Forward-thinking approach to India's evolving philanthropic landscape, understanding of India's clean energy trajectory, and ability to position Global Energy Alliance strategically within India's development ecosystem.
  • Cross-Cultural Management: Superior skills to collaborate between Indian and international teams, understanding of both local and global perspectives on philanthropy and development.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Commitment to inclusive development approaches that recognize India's diversity, with sensitivity to regional, linguistic, economic, and social differences within Indian communities.

Preferred qualifications

  • Language Skills: Proficiency in additional Indian regional languages
  • Sector Networks: Existing relationships with Indian clean energy companies, policy makers, and development practitioners; relationships with key Indian government departments will be added advantage
  • International Experience: Experience working with international development organizations or global philanthropy platforms
  • Digital Proficiency: Experience with Indian digital philanthropy platforms and emerging fintech solutions for charitable giving
