About the Call for Papers

Transformative Learning Theory has garnered significant attention in educational research due to its focus on transformative processes and potentials of adult learning. However, despite the extensive exploration and application of this theory in North American and European countries, there is a noticeable gap in the literature regarding its implementation in Asian contexts. By investigating how transformative learning theory manifests in Asian contexts, scholars can develop more holistic and nuanced understandings of the theory, ultimately contributing to the advancement of transformative learning practices in diverse sociocultural contexts and globally.

To recognize and encourage this important work, we are pleased to announce a special issue of the Journal of Transformative Education entitled “Exploring Transformative Learning Theory in Asian Contexts.” We invite researchers to submit a proposal. We are specifically looking for manuscripts that explore the theoretical perspectives and practical applications of transformative learning theory in diverse formal, nonformal, and informal learning settings within Asian countries, communities, and learning environments. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Asian scholars’ perspectives on the application of transformative learning theory in different disciplines and/or learning contexts
• Explorations of the phenomenon of transformative learning from the perspective of one or more Asian theories
• Research on the application of transformative learning theory in different contexts and/or disciplines in Asian countries
• Case studies of transformative learning interventions in Asian educational institutions or organizations
• Comparative studies of transformative learning practices across different contexts (e.g., Western vs. Eastern) and/or comparative studies of transformative learning practices across different Asian countries
• The role of cultural factors in understanding and applying transformative learning theory in Asian countries
