About the Organization

The Government of India vide Resolution No.8/136/68-P.I (Pers.I) dated 28.08.1970 formally established the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), under the Ministry of Home Affairs giving a new orientation to then existing Police Research and Advisory Council (1966) for the following reasons and with the primary objective of modernization of police force:

  • To take direct and active interest in the issues
  • To promote a speedy and systematic study of the police problems,
  • To apply science and technology in the methods and techniques used by police.

About the Fellowship

Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) started the Government of India Fellowship Programme in 1986 with the objective to encourage advanced studies in Criminology and Police Sciences at the national level and to foster research in these disciplines. Over the years, the scope of the Programme has been enlarged to include many new and contemporary disciplines in which research can be conducted on topics that are related to police and correctional services. The programme has been revised and modified to keep it abreast of the changing scenario. In the new format, the GoI Fellowships will now be awarded through the Central Universities and other universities/ institutes of excellence. The current number of GoI fellowships is 10.

BPR&D solicits applications for award of GoI Fellowship for the year 2024-25.

Objective:

The main objective of the 'Government of India Fellowship Programme of BPR&D' is to encourage and foster doctoral research work in police, criminal justice system, investigation, prosecution, internal security, forensics, technology in law enforcement, correctional services, etc., and related subjects having a bearing on police functioning, leading to award of M.Phil./Ph. D. Degree.

Eligibility

  • The Government of India Fellowship Programme of the BPR&D is open to candidates who have qualified in the National Eligibility Test (NET) of the UGC or the UGC-Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and are registered for their Ph. D. Degree in one of the subjects, i.e., police, criminal justice system, investigation, prosecution, Internal security, forensics, technology in law enforcement, correctional services, etc., and related subjects having a bearing on police functioning.
  • The candidates should have been registered for their Ph.D. Degree in one of the following universities/ institutes, which should comply with the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph. D. Degree) Regulation, 2022. (i) Sec. 2 (f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956. (ii) Grant-in-aid Deemed Universities under Sec-3 of the UGC Act, 1956. (iii) Universities/Institutions funded by the State/Central Government. (iv) Institutions of National Importance.
  • Age for GoI Fellowship: Not more than 30 years on the last date of receipt of application (i.e., 30.09.2024). A relaxation of up to 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC (Non- creamy layer, as per the Central list of OBC available on the website: www.ncbc.nic.in) SC/ST/PWD/ Transgender categories and to women applicants. Three years relaxation in age will be permissible to the candidates possessing L.L.M. Degree. Total age relaxation on the above ground(s) shall not exceed five years under any circumstances.

How to Apply

  • The guidelines/terms and conditions for GoI Fellowship and prescribed application for Government of India Fellowships for Doctoral Work in Criminology, Police Science and related subjects, are available on the BPR&D website https://bprd.nic.in/ or URL: https://bprd.nic.in/page/goi_fellowship.
  • The application forms are required to be filled properly and completely. Incomplete application is liable to be rejected. Application must be signed by Supervisor and the Head of Department; application which is not forwarded through the respective Head of Department; Application which is not forwarded through respective Head of Department/University will be rejected. Applications without attested copies of mark sheets and other supporting documents are liable to be rejected.
  • The subject of the email should be captioned “Government of India Fellowships for Doctoral Work in Criminology, Police Science and related subject”. The applications for GoI Fellowship along with all the necessary documents must be sent ONLY THROUGH EMAIL at email ID: jranalyst@bprd.nic.in, by the Concerned Department/ University/ Institute, in PDF format only.
  • All documents to be properly scanned and legible. Illegible applications/attachments shall be rejected.
  • The last date for submission of application is the 30.09.2024 (Monday). The applications received after the last date will not be considered.
