About the Organization

Nature for Water is purpose-built to help sponsors of watershed investment programs such as local utilities, government agencies and NGOs reach their technical objectives by providing gold-standard technical assistance.

The initiative is jointly managed by The Nature Conservancy and Pegasys, two partners who share deep experience in rolling out over watershed investment programs across the globe. The initiative aims to support 40–60 place-based engagements over a four-year period, while simultaneously open-sourcing tools and learnings to mainstream NbS within the broader water sector.

Nature for Water is generously underwritten by the Dancing Tides Foundation, LGT Venture Philanthropy, the Africa Scale-Up Fund, and other donors.

About the Proposal

Water security—ensuring access to sufficient, high-quality water—is a global challenge. The water we use daily depends on the landscapes it flows through, yet nearly half of global drinking water sources are significantly degraded. Population growth, climate change, and poor planning exacerbate water insecurity, leaving over 2.2 billion people without safe drinking water.

Addressing this requires long-term investment in watersheds, catchments, and river basins using Nature-based Solutions (NbS). We call this approach a Watershed Investment Program (WIP), which includes watershed management programs, water funds, and river basin restoration initiatives. However, organizing WIPs is complex and requires expertise—this is where Nature for Water (N4W) can help.

As a partnership led by The Nature Conservancy and Pegasys, N4W provides technical and implementation support to local organizations seeking to scale NbS for watershed health. Our international team specializes in hydrology, ecology, governance, finance, and stakeholder engagement, helping organizations design, fund, and implement NbS programs.

Winners receive pro-bono technical assistance to advance their programs.

Nature for Water's 5th Call for Proposals is open to advance water security across the globe. We aim to partner with local champions seeking to ideate and develop Nature-based Solutions (NbS) at landscape scale, to address water scarcity, flooding, and water quality issues. Winning applicants receive in-kind technical assistance from our N4W team to support program preparation and capacity-building. Typical applicants include utilities, river basin organizations, and water sector consortia.

N4W selection criteria focus on opportunities where we think our team can provide the greatest value, to help organizations transform ideas into implementation-ready NbS at landscape scale.

  • Are you a river basin organization, government agency or utility managing bulk water resources or addressing flood risks?
  • Are you, or do you have a local lead fluent in English and/or Spanish?
  • Are you looking for technical assistance to further develop your NbS Program at landscape scale?

How to Apply

The application process will begin with a Call for Ideas, a short application designed to be completed in a few hours. Submissions will undergo a Rapid Screening to identify the 20 most promising ideas. Shortlisted applicants will then advance to the next phase, where they will submit a Detailed Proposal.

Application Deadline: 11th April, 2025.
