Background

About Room to Read

Room to Read is a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children®, our innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in low-income countries during two time periods which are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education. We work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. By focusing on the quality of education provided within the communities and ensuring these outcomes are measured, we have created a model that can be replicated, localized, and sustained by governments. Room to Read has benefited 35.7 million children across communities in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia.

We have benefited more than 12.1 million children in India since 2003. The Literacy Program has a large and positive impact on reading skills across schools where we work. 1st and 2nd grade children have developed reading skills (reading with fluency and comprehension) that is three times greater than children in comparison schools. Additionally, children are annually checking out more books each year across our school libraries, demonstrating that they are developing reading habits from our program. We have been publishing a diverse range of story books in Hindi, Marathi, English, Urdu, Telugu, Kannada, and Gujarati that can be enjoyed by readers at various levels and capture children imagination. To date we have published 220 original titles.

3,67,884 girls have benefited from our Girls’ Education Program. 2912 girls have completed their secondary education (that is grade 12) and more than 64% GEP scholars have enrolled themselves in tertiary education.
