Job Description

The Chief of Staff will act as a strategic advisor to the Managing Director on the management of resources and minimising operating risks with oversight of the organisation. Working in close partnership with the Managing Director, this role is a member of the Executive Team and will oversee and contribute to functions including people and organizational development; strategic planning; and stakeholder engagement and communication; and operations.

Strategic planning

  • Support the Managing Director with strategic planning, annual and cyclical setting of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), monitoring progress and effort.
  • Lead the prioritization and tracking of projects, evaluating new ideas and opportunities, and ensuring all staff are engaged in tasks that are aligned with the organisation’s goals.
  • Participate in cross-affiliate strategic initiatives and work with global colleagues and senior global leadership teams to converge on global best practices and mission alignment.
  • Keep up-to-date with the Indian and global smart protein sector through newsletters, reports and data to inform high-level strategic thinking and decision-making, identifying critical shifts, risks and changes.
  • Maintain oversight, and coordinate across programmatic functions as needed, in the absence of the Managing Director.

Stakeholder engagement and communications

  • Prepare compelling and inspiring messaging (2-pagers, document briefs) for specific high-level stakeholders, including government officials, senior scientific experts, funding bodies, and donors in support of smart proteins within the Indian and global context in coordination with Communications.
  • Support the Managing Director in the formation, regularisation and governance of a Board of Advisors for GFI India and be responsible for all activities, once the Board is instituted

People and organisational development

  • Oversee the execution of improvements to internal structures by identifying knowledge gaps within the organisation and addressing them.
  • Act as an advisor to the Managing Director as well as a thought partner to the People and Operations Associate on HR matters for the GFI India team, including mentoring, coaching and developing a people-centric, supportive and engaging work environment.
  • Map and advise on GFI India’s departmental needs in terms of staff and skill-sets, and work with the management team to fill gaps in accordance with programmatic goals through high caliber hiring, training, and skill development.
  • Act as a thought partner to the management team for all performance management, internal promotions, job titles/changes, compensation and benefits and professional development and HR policies, working closely with the operations team.
  • Build a culture of high performance and continuous improvement by analysing employee engagement survey responses, developing recommendations on employee  initiatives and integrating different experiences and perspectives when making decisions. 

Finance, administration and operations

  • Identify and elevate financial and legal risks to the organisation in collaboration with financial advisors and accountants.
  • Coordinate with Finance to ensure alignment between financial reporting and budgets with programmatic goals.
  • Ensure organisational administrative processes are reviewed and improved in a timely manner for operational efficiency.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • A degree or equivalent experience in social sciences, business administration, international development, science, political science, law, or a related field. A masters, advanced business, management, public administration degree, or advanced business administration degree is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in people, strategy and/or program/operations management, with at least 5 years in executive management; experience in the nonprofit sector is preferred.
  • Experience and comfort in working with leadership teams, offering sound advice and executing high-level, cross functional, complex initiatives
  • Experience building coalitions and developing consensus among partners with different but complementary objectives.

Skills and behavioural attributes

  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, hunger relief, animal protection.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and organisational skills, with experience and comfort communicating with a range of stakeholders.

  • Outcomes-focused mentality with a track record of delivering results.
  • Cross-cultural competency: an ability to understand and effectively communicate with team members from different cultural backgrounds.
