About the Organization
A new agency, the Aga Khan Agency for the Habitat (AKAH), works to ensure that people live in physical settings that are as safe as possible from the effects of natural disasters, that residents who do live in such high risk areas are able to cope with disasters in terms of preparedness and response, and that these settings provide access to social and financial services that lead to greater opportunities and a better quality of life. The new agency merges the activities of the Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, with its prize-winning water and sanitation programmes and low-cost habitat products, such as smoke-free stoves; the humanitarian arm of AKDN, FOCUS, which promotes disaster mitigation and resiliency and intervenes after disasters; the AKDN’s Disaster Risk Management Initiative, which focuses on disaster preparedness in remote areas; and the environment- and habitat-related activities of the Aga Khan Foundation, including the Prince Sadruddin Fund for the Environment and the Foundation’s highly regarded rural support programmes.
Job Description
The Climate Change Coordinator drives climate mitigation and adaptation initiatives, focusing on GHG emissions management, sustainable practices, and climate risk assessment. Key responsibilities include conducting training, performing environmental assessments, and developing resilience strategies across AKAH programs.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct training, workshops, research related to GHG emission, environmental sustainability and Climate Change mitigation and adaptation measures including carbon sequestration.
- Provide technical guidance and support to built-environment, emergency management and development programs to implement mitigation and adaptation measures to reduce impact of climate change.
- Provide technical input in proposals to key donors in the area of Climate Change.
- Lead the AKAH Green House Gas (GHG) Measurement and Management initiative, AKDN net zero 2030 decarbonization plan of AKAH India and promote AKDN Green building guideline.
- Review the quarterly report of GHG emissions of AKAH and based on that develop strategies for reduction in alignment with global strategy and goals to go net zero by 2030.
- Be the AKAH India focal point for environment management, nature-based solutions, and climate action initiatives of head office across built-environment, emergency management and development programs.
- Work closely with the program teams to conduct environmental assessments, calculate emissions at program / project level and plan mitigation measures in accordance with the best practices.
- Conduct regular program site visits to ensure environmental compliance, suggest improvements, and report the findings with senior leadership team.
- Contribute to the urban habitat risk resilience program by conducting analysis of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and develop mitigation strategies.
- Conduct climate risk assessment of neighborhoods using climate and satellite data measuring the effects of climate change especially urban heat island in areas of interest.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Master’s degree in Environmental sustainability, Climate change, Environmental engineering, Environmental policy.
- Practical knowledge of climate change scenarios, analysis and application of projects and programs.
- Technical skills in data analysis, GIS and remote sensing to carry out assessment of climate risks.
- A published record of relevant academic research would be an advantage.
- Knowledge on GHG emissions management, green buildings and urban heat island assessment would be an advantage.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
