Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), founded in 1980, is a public-interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. It has been influential in shaping policies of Government of India and many state governments, as well as been a global influencer and thought leader in the science of environment, climate change, transportation, industrial and economic growth and governance. CSE has participated proactively in global climate negotiations, and advised several governments on environmental regulations and use of equitable resources and just governance.

Job Description

CSE’s Renewable Energy Programme (REP) is committed to championing the study of the most pressing issues related to the renewable energy development primarily in India and with an international perspective, as well as the international and domestic interventions that characterizes our response to energy access, energy security and sustainable development. Keeping this principle in mind, the team conducts and disseminates research on emerging renewable energy technologies and its commercialization / adoption in practice and help in developing capacities of various stakeholders through trainings and workshops to create multipliers.

The Renewable Energy team at CSE is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions. We are engaged in a variety of fields, including solar, wind, biofuels, and hydro energy. Within the bioenergy sector, the key focus areas are compressed biogas (CBG), ethanol, and biodiesel. Our efforts encompass research, policy advocacy, capacity building, and knowledge sharing aimed at amplifying benefits for stakeholders, particularly farmers. Recognizing our responsibility as an organization and as part of the global community, we strive to drive change by raising awareness about resources, technologies, and practices beyond mere financial considerations.

We are looking for a colleague with a strong background in renewable energy, bioenergy, and biofuels who would be an integral member of the team. The ideal candidate should have experience in undertaking research and advocacy to push renewable energy, especially in the context of bioenergy and biofuels, focusing on CBG, bioethanol, and biodiesel. The candidate will report to the Programme Director, who will give overall research direction to the team.

As part of a team, the candidate will conduct research through both primary data collection and secondary literature studies. The candidate will be responsible for the team’s research outputs, which includes reports, policy briefs, and articles in the media. H/she will be responsible for the dissemination of the team’s research through active engagement with policymakers, think tanks and civil society. H/she will need to follow regulatory and technical developments in India as well as in other countries, critique policy changes for internal discussions, and give feedback to the relevant stakeholders, including the Government.

Job Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Providing timely, factual information and data, as well as in-depth analysis on bioenergy, including compressed biogas (CBG), bioethanol, and biodiesel, emerging technologies and innovations, and the link between energy and climate.
  • Supporting CSE’s key role as a convener of stakeholder meetings and industry–government dialogue. These would lead to a deeper and up-to-the-minute understanding of the sector, technology markets, policies, and regulations.
  • Writing for the fortnightly magazine Down To Earth and using multimedia and social media to disseminate information and data that emerges.
  • Producing daily reports, news stories, analyses, and features with the ultimate goal of compiling a comprehensive State of Renewable Energy report.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • A Master’s or PhD in bioenergy and biofuels/ biotechnology/ renewable energy technology/ environmental sciences, engineering/ sustainable development, or other relevant fields.
  • A minimum of 5-6 years of relevant working experience, including in-depth knowledge and understanding of bioenergy technologies, policies, programmes, good practices and issues.
  • Ideally experienced in the policy research, analysis and writing.
  • Experience in developing country perspective. Experience of working in an international organization will be considered an asset.
  • Substantial record of research and publications with an emphasis on energy access, energy security and sustainable development, including non-scientific communications.
  • Excellent demonstrated writing & communication skills with fluency in English.
  • Must have proficiency in MS-Excel.
  • Must be a team player who is open to travel and take initiatives and has a good network in the sector. The position requires time bound deliverables.
