Job Description
This job contributes to the British Asian Trust’s success through leadership of British Asian Trust’s Child Opportunity Fund, a ten-year, fifty-million-dollar fund, focused on positively impacting every child in difficult circumstances, currently operating in four states with significant gaps in effectiveness of child protection and likely to expand into four additional states soon. The Head of Child Opportunity Fund will provide overall leadership to ensure that the programme meets its objectives and outcomes. This position will be the main ‘external face’ of the Fund and be responsible for all key stakeholder relationships (funders, all Government stakeholders, key players in the child protection sector, the partners in this Fund and all other key stakeholders). In addition, the Head of Child Opportunity Fund will also work closely with key colleagues and stakeholders within the British Asian Trust fundraising, finance and programme teams, and Board and Committee members, while assuming overall responsibility and accountability for the Child Opportunity Fund.
Job Responsibilities
Leadership and accountability for the Child Opportunity Fund
- Serve as the overall lead for the Child Opportunity Fund, overseeing programme delivery, fundraising, communications, finances and budgeting and key internal and external relationships.
- Oversee the financial and impact performance of the Child Opportunity Fund, by working with relevant teams and internal stakeholders.
- Lead and guide all staff within the Child Opportunity Fund, including the Programmes, MEL, Strategy and Finance teams. Drive a high-performance culture throughout the team and ensure it delivers strong results in keeping with programme ambitions.
- Coordinate with and provide strong programmatic leadership to Finance and Fundraising teams to ensure overall financial goals are met including raising additional funds as needed to support programmes.
- Coordinate as needed with Communications and HR, to ensure effective execution on Child Opportunity Fund related activities.
- Ensure effective project management for the overall programme, ensuring key activities meet deadlines and that stakeholders are kept informed of key milestones and progress.
- Manage political, reputational, regulatory/legal, and financial risks faced by the Child Opportunity Fund on an ongoing basis and work towards mitigating these risks.
- Update and report to the board and various sub-committees as needed on the progress made by the Child Opportunity Fund.
Develop and refine programme strategy
- Manage the development and refinement of the in-depth strategy for the Child Opportunity Fund in collaboration with Head of Programmes at British Asian Trust India, the Child Opportunity Fund Programmes team, and with input from relevant internal and external stakeholders, including British Asian Trust CEO, British Asian Trust India Executive Director and key funders.
- Refine and update the programme strategy as needed to ensure success.
- Work with the Head of Programmes to provide overall leadership for programme design
- Programme development including co-creating project objectives, activities, and outcomes with grantees.
- Grantee progress and support, including tracking grantee progress against defined targets/outcomes, providing day-to-day support, and capacity building of grantees.
- Work with the Head of Operations to ensure effective Grant management, grantee sourcing, screening, due diligence, contracting and disbursement.
Define government engagement strategy, and lead its deliver
- Identify key ministries and define British Asian Trust’s approach for government engagement, at the national, state and district level as relevant.
- Build on existing partnerships with various government departments and help develop new ones as needed to ensure programme success.
- Work with grantee organisations in building their government engagement plan which is in line with British Asian Trust’s larger government advocacy and engagement plan, by providing connects, attending key meetings, tracking actions, progress etc.
Drive external presence for Child Opportunity Fund in the sector
- Represent British Asian Trust at external events and convenings in the sector, key government meetings, and other external engagement related to Child Protection, as might be relevant.
- Be the key point of contact from British Asian Trust’s end on the Child Opportunity Fund and work with key stakeholders from the sector including CIFF to plan and execute implementation of the programme.
- Support British Asian Trust’s fundraising team to raise funds for the Child Opportunity Fund, from foundations, corporates, High Net-worth Individuals (HNIs), etc., domestically, and globally.
- Work with the British Asian Trust communications team to develop the communications strategy for the Child Opportunity Fund keeping in mind sensitivities and associated risks.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- At least 18–20 years of experience
- Experience managing similar large multi-state, multi-stakeholder programmes.
- Experience and credibility in the child protection sector in India would be nice to have, including in-depth understanding of child protection related issues, laws/policies, actors, etc.
- Relevant experience in engaging with government stakeholders at central, state and district level to drive change through government systems.
- Significant experience of leading an organisation, including strategic clarity and prioritisation, people and resource management, etc.
- A strong grasp of the political economy at both national and sub-national levels.
- Proven leadership and team management experience.
- Experience in fundraising to mobilize $50 million for a 10-year initiative.

- Proven ability to work at pace, often in an ambiguous environment.
- Ability to coordinate and work with diverse set of stakeholders, externally and internally (in India and UK).
