Job Description

The Tamil Nadu (TN) School Education Department aims to reform the quality of education in Government Schools through planned initiatives. One such initiative is transforming 28 schools across the State into Schools of Excellence. The initiative aims to provide the identified group of schools with required infrastructure, academic and co-curricular inputs that will enhance the learning environment for students and empower them to strive for excellence. These schools will act as platforms that will groom talent, nurture the spirit of sportsmanship and hard work and provide exposure to internal and external opportunities, thereby broadening the horizons of students and teachers.

The Program Manager will work with the leadership in the TN School Education Department to support and drive Schools of Excellence across the state. The person has to take ownership of implementing the program in the most efficient and effective manner by facilitating design of program, schedules, onboard partners, project costs and problem solve for issues. This person will be responsible for managing all operational needs for the project, and for coordinating with internal and external stakeholders on a daily basis.

Job Responsibilities

  • Full project lifecycle ownership - from initiation, understanding requirements, and delivery for multiple projects spanning identified focus areas.
  • Develop strong working relationships with state government officials, and act as an interface between key stakeholders (Government officials, Bhumi, partners and donors)
  • Ensure the overall program is aligned to and directly supports the achievement of goals and objectives of the state.
  • Prepare estimates and detailed project plans for all phases of the project.
  • Track day-to-day project activities and operational needs with regular reviews to the leadership team on project milestones, deliverables, dependencies and risks.
  • Manage project scope and any required changes by collaborating with all stakeholders.
  • Focus on continuously improving processes and methods to achieve desired results.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manage and groom team by establishing processes and approaches for the team to adopt.
  • Foster an environment that nurtures innovation, creative thinking, problem solving and working as a team to meet project goals.
  • Lead by example in setting high standards for ownership, communication and continuous improvement.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Post-graduate (MBA or MPP/MPA)
  • Total of 8-10 years of work experience, including 3-5 years of post-graduation work experience.
  • Experience with project and people management is required.
  • Experience working with the government and in the education sector is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
  • Creative and be able to enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community oriented
  • Possess the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including government, staff, external partners and donors
  • Expert written and verbal communication skills – English and Tamil
  • High Emotional maturity
  • Forward looking thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions
  • Resourceful, responsible and self-starting
  • High on ownership with eagerness to pick up additional responsibility when needed
  • Result oriented, and strong bias to action
  • Innate ability to network seamlessly with people across the spectrum.
