Janaagraha began as a movement to promote participatory democracy at the neighbourhood level. We soon discovered, however, that citizen participation alone was not enough.

Governments must also be equipped to deliver infrastructure and services, build their own capacity through training and technology, fully empower elected leaders, and ensure high standards of accountability and transparency.

We then adopted a two-track approach: resolving issues on services and infrastructure through participation, even as we worked to reform the systems that delivered them.

Job Description

To support our interventions and programs across these areas, we are looking for a highly motivated and innovative professional to work closely with the Head of Participatory Governance by providing backbone support in research, insights, strategy, knowledge management, stakeholder management, and new and special initiatives. The incumbent is expected to bring in hands-on experience in the above areas, preferably at the intersection of the domains of urban governance/development, decentralisation, transparency, accountability and participation.  This role will be based out of Bengaluru and the incumbent will have to work collaboratively with multi‑locational project teams.

Job Responsibilities

The main responsibilities of the Manager – Participatory Governance will include but not be limited to the following:

• Manage the knowledge support requirements of the program, by engaging in necessary research, drawing insights, providing data analysis and visualisation for decision making, impactful presentations and dialogue, advocacy campaigns, etc.
• Support analysing and documenting participatory models based on program intervention as well as comparative studies, for replication and scaling
• Anchor high quality knowledge products in different forms including print and audio-visual formats
• Assist the Head, Participatory Governance with synthesis of quality briefs and material for different initiatives, key meetings, presentations, proposals, events, media/social media outreach, etc.
• Liaise with different stakeholders such as government representatives, elected representatives, donors, community leaders, and CSOs as part of ongoing programs as well as to facilitate new initiatives
• Research and prepare briefs on emerging trends nationally and internationally in the domain of participatory governance and allied topics
• Pilot and manage new and special projects initiated/adopted by the program leadership
• Assist the leadership in project management and monitoring key result areas of the program

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Master’s degree in Public Policy, Urban Governance, Development Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, Law, Media/Journalism, Communications or equivalent
• 6-10 years of experience in policy, governance, non-profits, preferably in areas related to urban development
• Demonstrated track record in policy research and analysis, policy engagement, stakeholder relationship management, communications, and media relations management,
• Hands-on experience in high-quality knowledge documentation and preparation of knowledge products
• Experience in preparing high quality proposals and presentations
• Published articles and research papers in newspapers/journals, as well as recognitions/wins in competitions in the areas of governance, reforms, innovation, etc.
