About the Organization

The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai is a branch of the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to India under the direction of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.  The U.S. Consulate General Mumbai is located in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai.  The Consulate represents the United States in Western India, including the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Goa.

One of the busiest consular operations in the world, the Consulate provides an array of services to American citizens residing or traveling in our consular district, such as assistance in emergencies and help with passports and reports of birth.  We assist non-Americans with visas to the U.S., both for short visits and for immigration.  The Consulate can also assist Indian companies looking to invest or do business in the United States, and provide information on study and exchange programs in the United States.  Dosti House, Your American Space, is located at the Consulate in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, and provides information about the United States, programs on U.S. culture and society, and offers space to partners for programs on issues of mutual importance to the United States and India.  The Consulate also works in coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Delhi and Consulates in Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad to ensure a strong relationship between the United States and India.

Job Description/Responsibilities

The Emerging Voices (EV) Coordinator (Urdu and Underrepresented Voices) works under the direct supervision of the EV Specialist (Economics and Environment) or PAO designee and has no supervisory responsibilities.  Is the Public Affairs Section (PAS) Urdu language specialist, leading the Consulate’s engagement with Urdu-speaking audiences who influence or have potential to influence public opinion of the United States, and especially youth and communities not included in traditional U.S. diplomatic engagement.  Leads the Consulate’s Public Diplomacy (PD) outreach to underrepresented audiences in the consular district.  Uses Experiential Learning (EXPL), typically “learning through experience” activities such as tech or entrepreneurship camps, youth ambassadors, and other engagement programs as necessary to engage underrepresented groups.  Supports the Press and Media team with monitoring of Urdu-language media and engaging Urdu-language media outlets/journalists. Monitors Indian press and media coverage of issues of importance to the United States.  Identifies and advises Consulate leadership on strategies for promoting accurate, balanced Urdu-language Indian press and media coverage of U.S. foreign policy and American interests; correcting misinformation; and countering disinformation.  Builds productive relationships with press and media professionals in person and online.  Analyzes and reports—both formally and informally—on media trends and other topics of interest to U.S. foreign policy formulation. Mission India’s Overseas Staffing Model (OSM) rank is 5+, the highest of the seven categories of U.S. embassies, which denotes a Mission that is one of the very few, largest and most comprehensive U.S. missions in the world.  India is of the highest level of importance to U.S. interests and has one of the highest levels of global influence of countries around the world.  Mumbai is the country’s financial capital and the center of a consular district of nearly 300 million citizens.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • University degree in journalism, communications, international relations, public policy, intercultural/multicultural studies, or local equivalent is required.  Please specify the name of the Certificate/Degree/Diploma course and the major subjects for each qualification you possess.

Experience

  • A minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in a multilingual, multicultural, multinational, or government environment with marketing, public relations, communication, or education duties as a significant part of the job is required, as well as professional experience using social media tools.  Please describe your previous and current job responsibilities in detail.  Also mention your Supervisory experience in detail, if applicable for this position.

Language

  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing of English AND Urdu is required. This may be tested.  Please specify in your application your level of proficiency in each language listed here.
