The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) is a non-profit organisation focused on rigorous interdisciplinary knowledge generation for use by policy and practice, towards environmental conservation and sustainable, socially just development.

In the Himalaya, ATREE’s strategy is to work towards a future where resilient mountain and downstream societies sustainably enjoy the natural endowment of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) while protecting and preserving its rich biodiversity. ATREE has developed a 10-year strategy called “The Himalaya Initiative (THI)” with its focus in the IHR in the face of increasing biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and climate change impacting the region.

Job Description

This role requires comprehensive project management expertise including M&E, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to lead multi-thematic initiatives. The person will ensure adherence to programmatic and financial standards while driving continuous improvement.

Duration of Engagement: 3 years initially, extendable by another 2 years

Job Responsibilities

Leadership and Project Management:

  • Lead and facilitate project design briefing, project planning and monthly review with the project team and other cross-functional focal persons;
  • Manage & update the programmatic calendar;
  • Ensure appropriate follow through on actions, decisions, and commitments made by the Director-THI by working with the cross functional teams at the offices in Gangtok and Bengaluru;
  • Attend functional team meetings to keep a pulse on the progress and help connect dots with others across the organization;
  • Assist the Director-THI in facilitating effective decision-making;
  • Lead financial planning and monitoring budget utilization and ensure compliance with organizational standard operating procedure and donor guidelines.

Operational Oversight:

  • Accountable for ensuring the project activities and expenses are done as per expected project goal, outcome, outputs and work-plan
  • Facilitate creating quality benchmarks in the project and communicate the results and outcome expected through appropriate planning, regular monitoring.

Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Ensure project MIS and reports submission on time and as per donor timeline
  • Ensure adherence to project design through regular, careful and continuous monitoring of the project deliverables

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Act as ATREE’s representative to external stakeholders, including government officials, community leaders, and other partners.
  • Gather feedback from stakeholders to enhance project delivery.

Documentation and Learning:

  • Maintain detailed documentation of implementation processes.
  • Identify and share best practices and lessons learned.

Team Management:

  • Supervise and motivate the project team, ensuring alignment with project goals and outcomes.
  • Facilitate capacity building and provide necessary technical support.
  • Facilitate cooperation among landscape-level teams and thematic groups of ATREE including the Academy and the Centre for Policy Design.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in organization-wide activities to advance ATREE’s mission.
  • Undertake additional tasks as assigned by the Director- THI.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Advanced degree (Masters) in a related field, i.e. Environmental science, social sciences, project management or a professional post graduate degree highly preferred.
  • 12 to 15 years of overall experience with 6 to 8 years of experience in Project Implementation for Development Sector organizations. Additional weightage will be given to candidates with experiences in the mountains.
  • Strong networking skills and demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in handling high-value projects with integrated interventions.
  • Strong understanding of NGO operations and multi-sectoral collaboration.
  • Demonstrable skills in team coordination, motivation, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficient in analytical skills, report writing, and documentation.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across project locations in the Himalaya.
  • Experience working with nonprofits in the Conservation/Environment/Sustainability/Biodiversity space highly desirable
  • A self-motivator who can work independently to deliver on a set of goals.
  • Experience in managing budgets.
  • Handled multidisciplinary field teams with some staff directly reporting to the position.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills with a proven ability to engage across levels of an organization and across geographies
  • Understanding of fundraising practices, FCRA and CSR laws, codes of conduct and legislation a must
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills a must, with the ability to motivate and lead small teams
