About the Organization
Ekjut, translating to 'together' in several Indian languages, is a non-profit voluntary organization focusing on the themes of SURVIVE, THRIVE, and TRANSFORM. Partnering with rural and deprived communities, including urban homeless, our key areas encompass maternal and child health, nutrition, rural creches, and youth engagement.
Founded in 2002, Ekjut has achieved significant milestones, earning accolades such as the WHO Public Health Champion Award, Transforming India Award, and ImPact Trial of the Year award. Our interventions have been validated through collaborative community-based research trials published in high-impact journals like The Lancet, The Lancet Global Health, and BMC Public Health. Partnerships with government, leading academic institutions, philanthropies and networks have given us the opportunity to grow and develop as an organization. Employing our unique community empowerment and engagement process called Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) meeting cycle, Ekjut addresses various issues like maternal and neonatal health, child nutrition, Early Childhood Development, gender-based violence, mental health, and adolescent well-being. The four-phased PLA involves community mobilization, problem identification and prioritization, collaborative strategy development, and implementation with evaluation. While this inclusive approach is non-discriminatory, it prioritizes those most in need in every targeted community.
About the Programme:
Mobilizing Adolescents for Depression and Anxiety Disorders (MADAD) is a community-based research project aimed at evaluating a stepped care model to improve access to psychological treatment for adolescents with anxiety and depression in rural Jharkhand. The intervention is delivered by trained non- specialist workers.
The study explores:
- Explanatory models of mental health among adolescents, families, and community workers.
- Appropriate tools for screening anxiety and depression.
- Feasible community-based treatment pathways using non-specialist facilitators.
- The acceptability, cost, and effectiveness of this stepped care approach.
