About the Organization

The Centre for Research on the Economics of Climate, Food, Energy, and Environment (CECFEE) is dedicated to conducting in-depth economic research and analysis on the interlocking issues of climate change, energy security, environmental protection and food security in India. Some of CECFEE’s research projects also focus on the gendered dimensions of these core areas, as well as on women’s economic empowerment more broadly. The Centre seeks to facilitate a network of researchers on these issues across the country, and develop expertise to support the government in policymaking.

Job Description

In collaboration with the International Growth Centre (IGC), based at the London School of Economics (LSE), the Centre for Research on the Economics of Climate, Food, Energy and Environment (CECFEE), based at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is launching the India Sustainable Growth Hub (ISGH). The ISGH aims to produce and translate cutting-edge, applied, and policy-relevant economic research from top scholars in India and globally into actionable insights that inform and support sustainable growth strategies in India.

We are seeking a Country Economist and a Junior Economist to support ISGH’s research facilitation and policy engagement agenda.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing ISGH’s research and policy engagement agenda in coordination with programme leadership.
  • Conduct economic and policy analysis to support ongoing and new research projects.
  • Support coordination between researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration.
  • Support the planning and coordination of dissemination and capacity-building events, conferences, and workshops, and assist in providing technical inputs to policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the preparation and delivery of high-quality policy and research outputs, including policy briefs, research notes, summaries, blogs, and event materials for the dissemination of ISGH’s work to diverse audiences.
  • Engage in the management of research projects by ensuring, that outputs are received on time and satisfy our quality expectations.
  • Assist in maintaining communication and coordination between Program Directors, Lead Academics, and IGC Hub colleagues to support alignment between country-level policy priorities and the broader IGC research agenda.
  • Prepare regular updates and reports on research and policy activities, as well as the progress of ongoing projects, for submission to the ISGH leadership team and the IGC Hub.
  • Perform other responsibilities that may be assigned and as reflected in the workplan.
  • Support the dissemination of ISGH outputs through the ISGH website, newsletters, and social media channels.
  • Assist in the organization of ISGH events, including conferences, policy dialogues, and workshops.

For Country Economist, additional responsibilities will include:

  • Identify policy priorities, co-design research projects, and build and sustain relationships with diverse senior stakeholders across ISGH thematic areas.
  • Work closely with program leadership to facilitate matchmaking between researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders.
  • Proactively develop new research aligned with policy demand and ISGH’s thematic focus in line with the country strategy.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Masters degree in Economics or a closely related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience in economic research and data analysis (4+ years for Country Economist). At least 1 year of experience working with senior government stakeholders is strongly preferred for Country Economist position
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in policy-related work and communications, including analysis of policy issues and engagement with policy processes.
  • Strong foundation in economic theory, quantitative methods, and empirical research.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Stata, R, or Python) and familiarity with managing and interpreting datasets.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Knowledge of India’s development and policy landscape will be an advantage.
  • Experience working on development challenges in low-and middle-income contexts; India-specific experience and knowledge of the Indian economy will be strongly preferred.
  • Experience contributing to research outputs such as working papers, policy briefs, reports, or academic publications (co-authored or otherwise).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related field.

Salary

Junior Economist: ₹ 15–18 lakhs per annum (consolidated)

Country Economist: ₹ 30–33 lakhs per annum (consolidated)
