Job Description
This role is a vital part of our Healthcare & Life Sciences Trade team, which supports the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) at the British High Commission (BHC). DBT aims to promote British trade and investment globally, which is crucial for the UK's prosperity.
Our Healthcare & Life Sciences trade team is dedicated to helping UK exporters significantly increase trade with India. We do this through strategic export campaigns, addressing market access barriers, developing pipelines and assisting UK companies in converting opportunities into export deals and partnerships. Our key focus areas in India include healthcare, biopharma and medical technology. As part of our efforts, you will also tackle market access issues, such as non-tariff barriers, by lobbying or advocating with relevant government departments.
We are seeking a dynamic, high-calibre individual to enhance the UK-India trade relationship. As a senior team member, you will manage relationships with India's leading companies in biopharma, medical technology and healthcare. Ideally, you should have an existing network in this sector or be able to quickly establish one. You should be a self-starter, highly organized, and capable of planning and managing your work while building productive relationships. You will be a self-starter who can demonstrate a long-term objective; plan and manage a delivery model; identify, grow and make effective use of stakeholders.
Experience and knowledge of the Healthcare and/or Life Sciences sector are essential. Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors in India will be considered an advantage.
You will bring in-depth knowledge of the sector to develop a strategy for your region, targeting both current and long-term opportunities for UK businesses, with a focus on large or high-value deals where UK government support can make a significant impact.
Job Responsibilities
As a Senior Trade Advisor of the Healthcare & Life Sciences team for trade you will:
Market development and business strategy
- Develop and execute sector strategy for your region, enabling UK exporters to dramatically grow the volume of trade. This will be done through developing a pipeline of opportunities for UK businesses and by supporting UK companies to translate these opportunities into export deals. Support and scope opportunities in your region for the sector. As part of this you will be required to undertake limited travel in India, as well as to the UK on an occasional basis. Use key account management principles to build and manage senior level relationships with Indian and UK businesses, government stakeholders and partners within healthcare & life sciences.
Market access and policy support/work:
- Work on market access issues which hinder trade, including non tariff barriers. Build relationships with government officials in Department of Pharmaceuticals and Ministry of Health and Family welfare and other government departments.
Delegations and ministerial visits
- Support UK business delegations visiting India and Indian business delegations visiting the UK by organising various events and meetings.
- Support the sector lead in delivering events and activities in India and the UK. Support senior representatives, including UK Ministers, the High Commissioner, HM Trade Commissioner and other senior management, providing them with high-quality briefing and advice with an aim to strengthen relationships with senior local contacts and further facilitate towards achieving the objectives of the team and DBT.
Event management and planning
- Plan and deliver activities and events to connect UK business to opportunities across the wider network in India; and support colleagues in the team across India on specific projects, events and activities and be projects, mission lead for a strand every year

The 70/20/10 learning, and development model is applied, with both internal and formal opportunities readily available. In addition, the DBT team provides opportunity for sector specific ‘developing skills & knowledge’ training to increase understanding of the UK market or any specific trainings required for the role.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- More than 5 years of experience in sales or marketing is essential, especially within Healthcare and Life Sciences would be useful
- Excellent communication skills especially written and verbal communication is a must.
- An in-depth understanding of healthcare and/or life sciences sector, and a strong network in the sector are essential.

Language Requirements:
- Language: English

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- International exposure through education or work experience would be desirable.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements in India’s healthcare and pharmaceutical industries is highly desirable
- Experience of working in/with UK companies; knowledge of the business environment and of UK business related practices.
- Experience of working as part of a dispersed team.
- Experience of working in trade/investment promotion.
- IT competency, in standard MS Office tools, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel and skilled at using digital and social media to gather information efficiently
